Indians Can now Use Paytm for UPI Payments in UAE and 6 Other Countries
Indian travelers can now make seamless, cashless payments abroad with Paytm's UPI in seven countries
Paytm Enables UPI International Payments in UAE and Six Other Countries
India’s Unified Payment Interface (UPI) payments are now supported in a number of foreign sites by One97 Communications Limited (OCL), the firm that created Paytm. The goal of this new function is to give Indian tourists a smooth, cashless international payment experience.
Countries Supporting Paytm UPI Payments
Travelers from India can now use the Paytm app to pay with UPI in the UAE, Sri Lanka, Singapore, France, Mauritius, Bhutan, and Nepal. With this initiative, Indian tourists will be able to simply purchase for dining, shopping, and other local activities without having to use cash or other payment methods.
How to Activate UPI International on Paytm
Paytm makes it easy to set up UPI International, although it does require a one-time activation connected to the user’s bank account. Once enabled, customers can utilize UPI-enabled QR codes to make payments at foreign retailers. The service can be deactivated at any time after returning to India, and users can choose a usage duration of one to ninety days.
This feature also enhances security by reducing the risk of accidentally transacting with foreign merchants after deactivation. In addition, users are given a clear view of the foreign exchange rates and conversion fees applied by their bank during transactions, ensuring transparency.
Paytm’s Vision for Enhanced Travel Experiences
A Paytm spokesperson emphasized the company’s commitment to making international travel easier for Indian users:
“With UPI International, we’re thrilled to extend this ease to Indian travelers, enabling them to make secure, cashless payments in countries like the UAE, Singapore, France, Mauritius, Bhutan, and Nepal. With the upcoming holiday season, we are confident that this launch will make foreign travel even more convenient for users.”
Growing UPI Presence Internationally
Paytm’s move follows similar advancements in UPI adoption by other platforms and institutions:
- In March, PhonePe enabled UPI payments for UAE users at Mashreq Bank’s NEOPAY terminals.
- On July 3, NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) partnered with Network International to introduce UPI-based QR code payments across point-of-sale (POS) terminals in the UAE.
- On July 19, Al Maya Supermarkets, a prominent retail chain in the UAE, announced UPI payment acceptance across all its outlets.
- In August, UAE’s leading retail giant LuLu began offering UPI payment options in all its stores.
