India-UAE IMEEEC Leg to Get Digital Platform in 100 Days

G7 Backs Strategic Corridor to Enhance Cargo Movement and Trade Efficiency Between India, Middle East, and Europe

India-UAE Leg of IMEE-EC to Launch Digital Platform in 100 Days

NEW DELHI: Work on the India-UAE leg of the strategic India-Middle East Europe Economic Corridor (IMEE-EC) is set to kick off with the digital platform to exchange information between ports of the two countries likely to be operational within the first 100 days of the Modi government. This ambitious project is a significant step towards enhancing the efficiency and speed of cargo movement between India and Europe, through the Middle East.

The project, despite recent tensions in West Asia, received strong backing from the G7 last week. This endorsement underscores the importance of the IMEE-EC in derisking logistics and expediting cargo transit across multiple nations. The corridor aims to connect ports on India’s western coast directly with European ports, streamlining operations and enhancing trade relationships.

The India-UAE sea corridor is divided into five phases. The initial phase focuses on digital synchronization of procedures for cargo and vessel clearances at ports on both sides. This phase is crucial as it lays the groundwork for seamless operations through digitally enabled platforms. The second phase will address customs connectivity, ensuring that customs procedures are harmonized between the two countries. The third phase will involve coordination with regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with international standards. Subsequent phases will focus on further streamlining processes and expanding the corridor’s capacity.

A key element of the IMEE-EC strategy is the seamless movement of cargo from, for example, Hajipur in Bihar, India, to Haifa in Israel. This requires common port and customs documentation across all countries involved, from India and UAE to Jordan and Israel. Standardized equipment and containers in all ports and dry docks are essential to this seamless movement. Once fully operational, the plan is to ship goods from Indian ports to Haifa in just 48 hours. Achieving this ambitious target also necessitates constructing missing rail links in parts of Saudi Arabia and Jordan. An initial assessment of these needs is currently being undertaken by an Indian public sector company, highlighting the collaborative effort required for this project.

“Although we have ships operating between India and UAE, the first phase of the project will synchronize the procedures for cargo and vessel clearances at ports on both sides through digitally enabled platforms, streamlining operations. This will be the beginning of the IMEE-EC and will ensure ease of business,” said a source. This phase will primarily transport containerized items through the multi-national transport corridor, reflecting the project’s focus on efficiency and modernization.

The digital platform will be operational between key ports in India, such as Mundra, Nhava Sheva, and Kandla, and Jabel Ali in the UAE. This connectivity will enhance the logistical capabilities and operational efficiency of these ports, facilitating quicker and more reliable cargo movement.

In addition to the existing ports, the government’s approval to develop a mega port at Vadhavan in Maharashtra is also set to become a part of the IMEE-EC. This development is expected to further bolster the corridor’s capacity and capability, positioning India as a central hub in the new economic corridor.

The IMEE-EC represents a significant advancement in international trade logistics, promising to enhance connectivity, reduce transit times, and improve the overall efficiency of cargo movement between Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. With the strong backing of international allies and the strategic vision of the Modi government, the IMEE-EC is poised to become a landmark project in global trade infrastructure.
