Crescent Moon Signals a Time of Celebration and Gratitude

Eid al-Fitr 2025: Celebrations, Moon Sighting, and Global Observances

Ramadan, the sacred month of fasting, prayer, and self-reflection, is coming to an end, with Eid al-Fitr expected to be celebrated on March 30 or March 31, 2025, based on the sighting of the crescent moon.
It marks the beginning of Shawwal, the tenth month of the Islamic calendar, after Ramadan.

Muslims from all over the world fast from sunrise to sunset every day during Ramadan, while praying, reciting passages from the Quran, and giving charity. Sehri (Suhoor), a pre-dawn meal, marks the beginning of the day, and Iftar, a meal at sunset that often includes dates, fruits, and traditional dishes, marks its end.

Eid al-Fitr is a time for celebration, community, and thankfulness. Mosques and open spaces are the venues for Muslims to gather for special Eid prayers (Salat al-Eid). They then exchange greetings like “Eid Mubarak,” visit family and friends to deepen their bonds, give gifts and charity (Zakat al-Fitr) to make sure everyone can participate in the festivities, and enjoy festive meals that vary by region but typically feature sweets and traditional dishes.

Since the Islamic calendar follows the lunar cycle, Eid dates vary annually and across regions. Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, and Kuwait will observe the moon on March 29, 2025, to confirm Eid’s date. If the crescent moon is sighted on March 29, Eid will be on March 30, while if not, Ramadan will complete 30 days, and Eid will fall on March 31.

Saudi Arabia has announced a four-day public holiday from March 30 to April 2, with the possibility of extending it to six days for workers in the private sector. A three-day holiday from Shawwal 1 to 3 has been issued by the UAE, with an extra day added if Ramadan lasts longer. If Eid falls on March 30, Kuwait will have a three-day vacation; if it falls on March 31, Saudi Arabia will observe a nine-day holiday.

Local moon sightings or statements from Muslim-majority nations like Saudi Arabia will determine when Eid is celebrated in the US and Europe. Mosques and Islamic centers will host Eid prayers and community events.

Muslims throughout the world will unite to celebrate faith, thankfulness, and solidarity as the crescent moon brings in Eid al-Fitr 2025, joyfully and generously bringing Ramadan to a close.
