New Solar Project to Provide 24-Hour Renewable Power as UAE Advances Net Zero Goals

Dubai to Build Solar Plant with Battery Storage to Boost Clean Energy

Dubai plans to build a solar power plant with battery storage for uninterrupted power supply, a month after Abu Dhabi unveiled a similar $6 billion project, as the UAE pursues ambitious clean energy goals.

The seventh phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park will combine 1.6 gigawatts of solar energy with 1 gigawatt of battery storage, according to a statement released by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority PJSC.

This is the second 24-hour solar power project in the emirate, and it aims to solve a significant problem for renewable energy by relying on windy and sunny weather for production. In order to cut back on its usage of fossil fuels, the United Arab Emirates, the first Gulf nation to declare a net zero goal by 2050, also depends on nuclear power facilities.

The new solar project, which will be operational between 2027 and 2029, will be built and owned by a developer chosen by Dubai’s Dewa, which has chosen Deloitte LLP to provide advice on the project, according to the newspaper.

With a start-up date of 2027, the state-owned Masdar Company in Abu Dhabi is planning to build a 5.2 gigawatt solar power project. The project’s battery storage technology can supply up to 1 gigawatt of baseload electricity.
