Brahmapuram biomining will end by May, with plans for a biopark

Emirates-backed biomining transforms Kochi’s Brahmapuram into a sustainable waste management hub

Brahmapuram Revival: Kochi’s Dumping Ground Transforms with Biomining & Biogas Plant

Kochi’s Brahmapuram dumping ground is well-known for both the catastrophic fire that started in March 2023 and its enormous waste pile. According to M.P. Rajesh, the local government minister who visited the site on Monday, 75% of the bio-mining work has already been finished, and the area will soon be transformed into a bio-mining park.

Of the estimated 843,000 tonnes of waste at the site, 608,325 tonnes have been removed through bio-mining, reclaiming about 18 acres of land. This process has cleared 46% of the total 39-acre area. Rajesh confirmed that the biomining is expected to be finished by May.

He expressed that the Brahmapuram disaster in 2023 provided a unique opportunity to create a cleaner, garbage-free Kerala, with the end goal of converting the waste site into a “paradise.” Despite some initial skepticism, the government is fulfilling its promise of revitalizing the area, with plans to establish a park in the reclaimed space. This effort complements the state’s bigger trash management programs, such as the Malinya Muktham Nava Keralam program, which aims to minimize garbage throughout the state.

In addition to the biopark, BPCL’s biogas facility is expected to begin operations by the end of March.
Every day, 150 tons of biodegradable trash will be processed at this facility, producing 15 tonnes of biogas that will be pipelined to the refinery.

Further, several waste treatment facilities are in the works at Brahmapuram. These include a windrow compost plant, a refuse-derived fuel (RDF) plant, a waste-to-energy plant, a construction and demolition waste plant, and a leachate treatment plant, all aimed at improving the area’s waste management infrastructure.
