Big Relief for Expats: India-UAE Airfares to Drop Significantly!

Proposed Aviation Reforms to Increase Flights, Lower Costs, and Strengthen Bilateral Ties

India-UAE Airfares Set to Drop, Boosting Travel and Trade

Abu Dhabi: The India-UAE route is one of the most in-demand and busiest international air routes, as Indians form the largest expatriate community in the UAE. But the high airfares are often a major setback for expatriates. Often, expatriates do not reach their homeland during the festive season due to this.

But a solution has now emerged. India and the UAE are set to witness a major boost in aviation relations, according to a report by CNBC-TV18. The reduction in airfares between India and the UAE could save up to US$1 billion for Indian consumers. The proposal was made by UAE Ambassador to India H.E. Abdulnasser Jamal Al Shali. He also pointed out that cooperation in the aviation sector will be important in strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.

Even a phased 5% annual increase in bilateral seat capacity would lead to a 20% increase. This is expected to add over $152 million to the consumer surplus by 2028. It would also reduce airfares on some routes by 20%. This would benefit millions of passengers, he said.

The UAE has proposed a 4:1 aviation connectivity ratio with India. The aim is to temporarily work in favour of Indian airlines as they increase their capacity. Under this, for every additional seat or light allocated to UAE airlines, Indian airlines would be allowed to operate four additional aircraft or increase seats.

Anshali noted that this ratio is a starting point and can be revised over time. The ratio can be changed from 4:1 to 3:1, 2:1 and eventually 1:1 as Indian airlines expand their international operations. The aim is to promote more competition, increase air traffic and increase connectivity to tier-2 and tier-3 destinations outside metro cities.

The effort is to allow UAE airlines greater access to India’s tier-2 and tier-3 cities such as Jaipur, Lucknow, Coimbatore, Visakhapatnam, Patna, Bhubaneswar and Amritsar. The UAE’s proposed expansion plan will benefit both Indian passengers and airlines. The increased seat availability will significantly reduce airfares.

This will make travel between India and the UAE less expensive. More flights will enable better connectivity. There will be flights from smaller Indian cities to major UAE hubs such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. The increase in air traffic will increase tourism, trade and economic activities between the two countries.

This will benefit industries such as hospitality, retail and logistics. At the same time, there are some challenges behind this proposal. The phased ratio is intended to help Indian airlines in the long run. But some Indian airlines are concerned that giving more access to UAE carriers could hurt their market share in the long run.
Dubai-based Emirates has moved to review the bilateral air services agreement as it has reached its maximum capacity of 66,000 seats per week to Indian cities. It is noteworthy that the efforts for the new reform are taking place in this context. Indian airlines have opposed the increase in Emirates Airline seats.
In 2023, Air India CEO Campbell Wilson had warned that this should not be allowed. “It is not in the national interest as Air India has made huge investments and purchased aircraft to provide non-stop connectivity to the US and Europe,” he had said.

India’s airports need to improve infrastructure to develop air capacity. This will be challenging in tier-2 and tier-3 cities. In addition to aviation, the UAE and India are deepening their economic and strategic partnerships. Bilateral trade between the two countries has exceeded $80 billion.

This is growing at a rate of 15% per year. Both countries recognize the importance of seamless travel for business and tourism. Alshali also highlighted that India-UAE cooperation in defense and technology is moving forward.
Beyond trade and aviation, India and the UAE are expanding their partnership into strategic areas such as petroleum reserves, genome sequencing, and data centers. The UAE and India signed a bilateral air services agreement in January 2014.

This can be achieved through interline agreements between Indian and UAE airlines, and a series of infrastructure investments where the UAE can support Indian airport development projects through public-private partnerships (PPPs), such as the Adani Group’s partnership with Abu Dhabi Airports for the management of Mumbai Airport.
