India and UAE Discuss Key Economic Route

Emirates and India Boost Trade, Ports, and Green Energy Under IMEEC

India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor Gains Momentum with India-UAE Trade Talks

A significant boost has been given to the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC), a highly ambitious Transcontinental Connectivity Project launched during the G20 Summit in Delhi in September 2023. This strategic initiative, which includes signatories such as India, UAE, USA, EU, Saudi Arabia, France, Italy, and Germany, aims to enhance global trade connectivity by linking India, Europe, and the United States through the Middle East.

According to a statement issued by the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi on Monday, a high-level delegation from India, led by T.K. Ramachandran, Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPS&W), held substantive discussions with key stakeholders to accelerate the progress of IMEEC.

India-UAE Discussions on Port Connectivity and Trade Digitization

As part of the delegation’s activities, T.K. Ramachandran met with Abu Dhabi Ports CEO H.E. Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi to talk about digital integration, trade facilitation, and port connection. The Indian delegation also consisted of:

  • H.E. Sunjay Sudhir, Ambassador of India to the UAE
  • Sh. Rahul Mithal, Chairman and Managing Director of RITES Ltd
  • Sh. Unmesh Wagh, Chairman of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA)

An interactive session involving terminal operators, shipping lines, and customs authorities was held before to the high-level meeting in order to discuss the operational aspects of IMEEC. Additionally, a presentation detailing the integration of commercial infrastructure and logistics between India and the UAE was given.

MAITRI and the Virtual Trade Corridor: Strengthening India-UAE Trade

A key highlight of the discussions was the Master Application for International Trade and Regulatory Interface (MAITRI), a unified digital trade facilitation platform.

MAITRI was officially launched in September 2024, during the visit to India of His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi.

The purpose of MAITRI is to integrate the current digital commerce platforms in India, such as:

  • National Logistics Portal-Marine (NLP-M)
  • Indian Customs Electronic Gateway (ICEGATE)
  • Unified Logistics Interface Platform (ULIP)

These platforms will be linked with UAE’s trade and logistics systems, ensuring seamless, paperless, and efficient trade connectivity.

The Virtual Trade Corridor (VTC), a project started during the Crown Prince’s visit, will also receive backing from MAITRI. In addition to serving as an essential part of IMEEC, the VTC will boost the present USD 85 billion in bilateral trade between India and the United Arab Emirates.

Developments in the Partnership between Digital Trade and Green Energy

The MAITRI platform has already seen significant advancements. RITES Ltd. and C-DAC have been tasked by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPS&W) with developing MAITRI. These organizations collaborate closely with important Indian ports, such as:

  • Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA)
  • Deendayal Port
  • Other major ports in India

A workshop was held in Mumbai on February 27, attended by:

  • Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal
  • Abu Dhabi Ports and DP World representatives
  • Key stakeholders from the UAE

The IMEEC signatory countries account for a significant share of global GDP, making the initiative a key alternative supply route connecting India, Europe and the US via the Middle East. Beyond port and rail infrastructure, IMEEC is set to enhance energy and digital connectivity.

India-UAE cooperation does not stop with trade facilitation. Work is already underway to establish a power grid connecting the UAE and India, enabling the exchange of solar power between the two countries. In addition, India and the UAE are actively working on green hydrogen projects and public digital infrastructure to further strengthen their economic ties.

Strengthening economic ties through IMEEC

The recent discussions between India and the UAE mark another milestone in the development of IMEEC and India-UAE trade integration. The NLP-M, MAITRI and VTC platforms will streamline trade activities, reduce bureaucracy and enable faster movement of goods between the two countries.

With IMEEC’s vision of seamless connectivity across India, the Middle East and Europe, these developments solidify India’s position as a global trade hub, while strengthening its strategic partnership with the UAE.
