After Maldives, India sends onions to Sri Lanka and UAE
Strengthening Regional Relations Through Essential Commodities

India Supplies Onions to Sri Lanka and UAE After Assisting Maldives
The credibility of India’s neighborhood first policy, spearheaded by the Narendra Modi government, shines through as the country gears up to provide significant quantities of onions to Sri Lanka following its assistance to the Maldives under the pro-China Mohammed Muizzu regime. Additionally, on April 3, India authorized an extra 10,000 metric tons of onions for its close ally, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), on top of the 14,400 metric tons agreed upon earlier on March 1.
Despite the potential to leverage the situation before the crucial Majlis elections on April 21, India’s commitment to supplying essential commodities to the Maldives remains steadfast, as highlighted in the export notification. This exempts essential items from any existing export restrictions or prohibitions, ensuring continued support to the Maldives irrespective of export bans imposed by India due to unforeseen production shortfalls.
Muizzu’s diplomatic efforts to secure funds from Turkey, China, and the UAE have yielded no positive results, leaving the Maldives without pledged grants from these nations. Moreover, Saudi Arabia’s interest in the Maldives has waned following Muizzu’s visit to Turkey shortly after assuming the presidency, signaling a shift away from traditional alliances.
The Maldivian economy languishes under Muizzu’s leadership, with no revival of infrastructure projects since his tenure began. With substantial debt repayment obligations looming, the country faces financial strain, owing approximately USD one billion in sovereign bond repayments in 2026. Additionally, Male owes significant sums in interest to SBI for treasury bills purchased by the Indian multinational bank.
Muizzu’s anti-India policies have led to a decline in high-spending Indian tourist arrivals in Male, replaced by low-spending Chinese tourists. Despite the uncertainty surrounding the Majlis elections, the Modi government remains committed to ensuring that the Maldivian public does not bear the brunt of its leader’s erratic policies.
India’s proactive approach to regional diplomacy and commitment to supporting neighboring countries during times of need underscores its dedication to fostering strong bilateral relations. The assistance provided to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, coupled with strategic decisions regarding onion exports to the UAE, exemplifies India’s role as a reliable partner in the region. As geopolitical dynamics evolve, India’s neighborhood first policy continues to serve as a cornerstone of its foreign policy objectives, promoting stability and cooperation across South Asia and the Indian Ocean region.
