Abu Dhabi Strategic Debate Launches 11th Edition to Address Global Instability

Abu Dhabi [UAE], November 11: The 11th annual Abu Dhabi Strategic Debate (ADSD) has commenced, bringing together global leaders, policymakers, and experts in Abu Dhabi under the theme “The Illusion of Stability: A World in Flux.” Hosted by the Emirates Policy Center (EPC), this two-day event examines key shifts in global strategic landscapes, including heightened militarization, shifting alliances, and the evolving roles of major powers. The conference particularly focuses on the Middle East’s continued instability and the region’s significant role within broader global dynamics.

A discussion on the UAE’s strategic goals, including its path for sustainability, economic diversification, and technological advancement, kicked off the event. The UAE president’s diplomatic adviser, Dr. Anwar Gargash, emphasized in his keynote speech the critical necessity to prioritize the lives and dignity of vulnerable communities by integrating humanitarian viewpoints into global strategy-making. In order to stabilize the Middle East, he emphasized the UAE’s strategy under President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, which prioritizes de-escalation, dialogue, and diplomacy.

Dr. Gargash addressed the ongoing situations in Sudan, Gaza, and Lebanon and reiterated the UAE’s commitment to promoting peace and offering humanitarian assistance. He reiterated the UAE’s commitment to the Palestinian cause, cited the need for a united Arab response to regional crises, and promoted a two-state solution that creates an independent Palestinian state.

Dr. Gargash also outlined priorities for Lebanon, including the distribution of humanitarian aid, presidential elections, and bolstering the Lebanese army to uphold national sovereignty. For Sudan, he highlighted the importance of a ceasefire, progression towards civilian-led governance, and respect for territorial sovereignty, combined with humanitarian support. Reflecting on Middle Eastern stability, Dr. Gargash noted the critical need for compassion, collaboration, and a unified approach. He reiterated the UAE’s commitment to humanitarian aid, political resolution, and conflict reduction. Warning against further polarization, he urged regional cooperation to foster stability and avert escalation.

He further highlighted the significant role of the United States in Middle Eastern crises but advocated for a shift in U.S. policy to balance humanitarian concerns with strategic interests, moving away from fragmented responses. With a new U.S. administration taking office, Dr. Gargash emphasized the importance of a comprehensive approach for regional security and shared that President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has conveyed congratulations to President-Elect Donald Trump, reaffirming the UAE’s commitment to strategic ties with the U.S.

The UAE’s ambition to be a global hub for innovation, leveraging advancements in AI, sustainable energy, and technology, was also highlighted, with Dr. Gargash emphasizing strong UAE-U.S. partnerships in technology, space, and climate initiatives. “The UAE actively participates in international forums like the G20 and BRICS to support global peace, sustainability, and economic collaboration,” he added.

Concluding his address, Dr. Gargash called for a balanced strategy that aligns political objectives with humanitarian values, advocating for economic development, good governance, and youth opportunities. He underscored that policy should ultimately improve the lives of ordinary people, emphasizing the need for collaborative and sustainable development for a stable future.

Dr. Ebtesam Al-Ketbi, President of the Emirates Policy Center, remarked that this year’s forum occurs amid significant global and regional changes, pointing to Donald Trump’s electoral victory and the ongoing shifts in U.S. foreign policy against intense global competition. Al-Ketbi noted that discussions on day one addressed major geopolitical issues, such as power rivalries, the role of key Asian players, and the emergence of “middle powers,” as well as the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Al-Ketbi also highlighted critical issues like transportation routes and logistic corridors, which are increasingly significant due to competition over rare minerals, maritime security concerns in the Red Sea, and the impact of Houthi threats to navigation. The forum further delves into how conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon are affecting regional stability and explores the future of the Palestinian state, spotlighting the UAE’s role in promoting growth and opportunity despite a crisis-laden global context.

The forum features a distinguished roster of speakers and participants from across the Arab world, Asia, Europe, and Africa, underscoring its status as a significant platform for addressing the world’s pressing strategic challenges.
