UAE Women l ICC Award Ahead of Asia Cup vs. India, Pakistan, Nepal
Recognition Highlights Rapid Progress as Team Prepares for Matches Against Nepal, Pakistan, and India

The rapid progress of women’s cricket in the UAE has received significant recognition with an award from the International Cricket Council (ICC). The UAE women’s cricket team earned the ICC’s Associate Member women’s performance of the year award, highlighting their achievements over the past year. This honor reflects the team’s outstanding results and their near qualification for the Women’s T20 World Cup.
Remarkable Performance
Under Esha Oza’s leadership, the UAE team almost pulled off a historic upset against Sri Lanka in the T20 World Cup Qualifier in Abu Dhabi. They finished just 15 runs short of securing a spot in the World Cup. To reach this point, the UAE women won the pre-qualifier tournament in Malaysia, which contributed to their ICC award.
Mubashshir Usmani, General Secretary of the Emirates Cricket Board, expressed pride in the team’s achievements. He stated, “This award is a proud moment for UAE cricket.” Usmani highlighted the focus placed on developing women’s cricket, which has started to yield results.

Development and Growth
The UAE women’s team has shown significant improvement in recent years. They enjoyed an impressive unbeaten streak in T20 internationals until 2022. That same year, they made their debut at the T20 World Cup Qualifier, showcasing a squad filled with promising young talent. Two years later, they advanced to the semifinals, narrowly losing to the experienced Sri Lankan team.
The development of women’s cricket extends beyond the national team. Mahika Gaur, a talented product of the UAE girls’ cricket program, switched her allegiance to England in 2023. Despite facing challenges, Gaur’s journey highlights the positive impact of UAE’s investment in women’s cricket.
Asia Cup Preparations
As the UAE women’s team prepares for the Women’s Asia Cup in Sri Lanka, starting this week, the ICC award serves as a morale boost. They will begin their campaign against Nepal, followed by matches against Pakistan and India. These matches represent their first competitive outings since the narrow loss to Sri Lanka.
However, unseasonal weather in Dambulla has hindered their preparations. The team’s first warm-up match was washed out, and they lost the second match to a strong Sri Lanka A side. Despite these setbacks, coach Ahmed Raza remains optimistic.
“We had three really good catches and two run outs,” Raza noted, emphasizing the importance of solid fielding. “We look to minimize runs and seek opportunities for run outs. While we may not achieve perfection, we aim to get as close as possible.”
Seizing Opportunities
The Asia Cup offers a chance for the UAE players to showcase their skills against top-tier opponents. Raza believes that the team can draw inspiration from their performance against Sri Lanka. He said, “When you play against well-ranked teams, you return to the basics of cricket.”
Raza added, “We focus on doing the fundamentals right and executing our game plan.” He emphasized the need for consistency, as successful teams continually hit their lengths and adapt their strategies. If the UAE women can implement their plan effectively, they are confident of delivering a commendable performance.
The Asia Cup not only presents an opportunity for competition but also allows the UAE to strengthen its presence in women’s cricket. With recent achievements and strong community support, the UAE women’s team is set to continue its journey of growth and success on the international stage. As they take the field, they carry the hopes of a nation eager to see its women athletes shine globally.
