India-France-UAE Trilateral Focal Points Meeting Almost Held: MEA

Virtual Meeting Focuses on Advancing Cooperation in Economy, Energy, Environment, and Culture as per 2023 Roadmap

India, France, and UAE Hold Virtual Trilateral Meeting to Review Joint Roadmap

New Delhi: India, France, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have conducted a virtual trilateral focal points meeting, as announced by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Wednesday. This meeting reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen cooperation among the three nations, focusing on the strategic goals set out in the Joint Roadmap agreed upon in early 2023.

The virtual meeting served as a platform for officials from the three countries to discuss and review progress in their collaborative efforts, in alignment with the Joint Roadmap established in February 2023. According to MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, the discussions covered a wide range of topics including economic collaboration, infrastructure development, innovation, energy, environmental sustainability, cultural exchanges, education, and people-to-people interactions.

“India-France-UAE Trilateral Focal Points meeting held virtually,” Jaiswal stated in a post on the social media platform X. The detailed discussions aimed to assess advancements in these key areas and strategize for future initiatives.

At the beginning of February 2023, Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra participated in the India-France-UAE Trilateral Dialogue, where the focus was on furthering cooperation in various critical fields such as defense, energy, environment, innovation, and people-to-people exchanges. This dialogue was a follow-up to the agreements made during the Foreign Ministers’ telephone call on February 4, 2023.

The trilateral framework was initially established in September 2022 when the foreign ministers of India, France, and UAE met on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. During this meeting, they agreed to form a formal trilateral cooperation initiative with the goal of enhancing collaboration across several areas of mutual interest. This initiative aims to promote international stability and prosperity, while building upon the strong and collaborative ties between the three nations.

The trilateral cooperation initiative was designed to address various global challenges, focusing on energy projects, particularly solar and nuclear energy, as well as efforts to combat climate change and protect biodiversity. The joint statement from the September 2022 meeting emphasized the need to work together on clean energy solutions and environmental protection, with a particular focus on the Indian Ocean region.

In addition to these objectives, the three countries planned to explore partnerships with the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) to implement concrete, actionable projects related to clean energy, environmental sustainability, and biodiversity conservation.

The trilateral initiative also seeks to enhance cooperation among the development agencies of India, France, and UAE on sustainable projects. This includes aligning their respective economic, technological, and social policies with the goals of the Paris Agreement to address climate change.

The statement from the meeting highlighted that a series of trilateral events would be organized to support these efforts, in the context of India’s G20 Presidency and the UAE’s hosting of COP-28 in 2023. These events are expected to facilitate further discussions and initiatives related to climate action and sustainable development.

Furthermore, the three countries have committed to expanding their cooperation through specific initiatives such as the Mangrove Alliance for Climate, led by the UAE, and the Indo-Pacific Parks Partnership, led by India and France. These initiatives aim to address climate challenges and promote environmental sustainability through collaborative efforts.

Overall, the virtual trilateral focal points meeting underscored the commitment of India, France, and UAE to advancing their shared goals, strengthening their partnership, and contributing to global efforts in energy, environment, and sustainable development.
