UAE Police warn against violation to avoid Dh1,000 fine

Initiative aims to reduce accidents and fines by emphasizing lane discipline and preventing sudden swerving

Ajman Police Launches Road Safety Campaign: Emphasizing Lane Discipline and Safe Driving

Ajman Police have launched a comprehensive road safety campaign titled ‘Your Commitment Means Safety’ aimed at raising awareness among motorists about the importance of maintaining lane discipline and avoiding illegal swerving. This initiative comes amidst growing concerns over road safety violations that contribute significantly to accidents and fatalities on UAE roads.

The campaign’s primary focus is to educate drivers on the consequences of sudden swerving, a behavior that not only jeopardizes their safety but also results in fines and penalties. Violators face a substantial fine of Dh1,000 and accumulate four black points on their driving license, emphasizing the strict enforcement of traffic regulations by Ajman Police.

In a social media announcement, authorities highlighted several factors that often lead to unsafe swerving, including poor vehicle tire conditions and inadequate vehicle maintenance practices. These issues underscore the importance of regular vehicle inspections and adherence to safety standards to prevent accidents caused by mechanical failures.

Moreover, motorists were reminded of essential safety practices designed to enhance road safety, such as using indicators when changing lanes, adhering to prescribed speed limits, and exercising caution during adverse weather conditions. The campaign also addresses the dangers of distracted driving, urging drivers to maintain focus on the road and avoid distractions that can lead to accidents.

Lt. Col. Rashid Humaid bin Hindi, deputy director of Ajman Police’s traffic and patrols department, emphasized the significant impact of sudden swerving on road safety statistics in the UAE. According to recent reports, sudden swerving accounted for a staggering 71% of total fatalities and 61% of injuries on UAE roads in 2023, highlighting the urgent need for stricter enforcement and public awareness campaigns.

Statistics from the Ministry of Interior (MOI) revealed that there were 352 road fatalities nationwide in the previous year, reflecting ongoing challenges in improving road safety despite efforts to enforce traffic laws and educate drivers. Ajman alone recorded 11 fatalities and 133 injuries due to road accidents during the same period, underscoring the critical importance of continuous awareness initiatives like ‘Your Commitment Means Safety’.

Safety experts and authorities have outlined detailed guidelines for motorists to ensure safe lane changes and driving practices:

  • Use indicators to signal lane changes and communicate intentions to other drivers.
  • Check mirrors (left, right, and rear) to assess surrounding traffic conditions before making a maneuver.
  • Perform shoulder checks to eliminate blind spots and verify the clearance of adjacent lanes.
  • Maintain a safe distance from other vehicles and avoid abrupt maneuvers that can endanger nearby motorists.

By promoting these safety measures, Ajman Police aims to instill a culture of responsible driving and reduce road accidents attributed to reckless behaviors like sudden swerving. The ‘Your Commitment Means Safety’ campaign serves as a reminder for motorists to prioritize safety on the road, not only for their own well-being but also for the safety of fellow road users and pedestrians.

Through continuous education, enforcement, and community engagement, Ajman Police strives to create safer road environments and contribute to the overall goal of reducing traffic-related incidents and fatalities in the Emirate.
