Oman Celebrates Annual Day Honoring Globally Influential Omani Figures

Celebrating Omani Excellence: UNESCO-Honored Figures and Historical Landmarks

Muscat, Oman – On February 10 each year, the Sultanate of Oman commemorates the annual day dedicated to globally influential Omani figures recognized by UNESCO. The celebration aims to highlight the cognitive and scientific legacy of these remarkable individuals at both local and global levels. Notably, this year’s program emphasizes the 350th anniversary of the establishment of Jibreen Fort, a significant Omani historical event.

Oman has successfully secured inclusion in the UNESCO Programme for Important Historical Events and Globally Influential Personalities, showcasing seven Omani figures and one historic event. Among those honored are linguist Al Khalil bin Ahmed Al Farahidi (2005), doctor and pharmacist Rashid bin Omairah Al Hashimi Al Rustaqi (2013), and polymath and reformer (2015).

The year 2019 saw the inclusion of socialite Sheikh Nour Al Din Abdullah bin Humaid Al Salmi, doctor and physicist Abu Muhammad Abdullah bin Muhammad Al Azdi (known as Ibn Al Dhahabi), and Omani poet Nasser bin Salem Al Rawahi (nicknamed Abu Muslim Al Bahlani). In 2021, Omani navigator Ahmed bin Majid Al Saadi joined the prestigious list.

During the Administrative and Financial Affairs Committee meetings of the forty-second session of the UNESCO General Conference in November of the previous year, the Sultanate of Oman successfully added two new cultural elements to the program: the 350th anniversary of Jibreen Fort’s establishment and the 150th anniversary of the death of historian and literary poet Hamid bin Muhammad bin Raziq.
