UAE Ramadan begins: Residents look forward to long Eid Al Fitr holidays

Residents prepare for Ramadan while anticipating long Eid Al Fitr holiday break in March

Muslims across the United Arab Emirates began observing the holy month of Ramadan today (February 18), as residents nationwide prepare to experience the spiritual atmosphere of fasting, prayer and reflection. Along with the start of Ramadan, many are also looking forward to the long Eid Al Fitr holidays expected at the end of the month.

According to Islamic tradition, the duration of Ramadan depends on the sighting of the crescent moon and typically lasts 29 or 30 days. While the holy month focuses on fasting, prayers and spiritual reflection, anticipation for the upcoming public holidays has already begun to grow among residents.

When is Eid Al Fitr 2026 expected?

As per the UAE’s official public holiday calendar, Eid Al Fitr will be observed from Shawwal 1 to Shawwal 3 in the Islamic calendar.

Based on current astronomical calculations, the Eid holiday is expected to fall between March 20 and March 22, 2026 (Friday to Sunday), giving residents a confirmed three-day break. However, the final dates will depend on the official moon-sighting announcement.

The moon-sighting committee is expected to observe the crescent moon on March 18.

  • If the Shawwal crescent is sighted on March 18, Eid will begin on March 19, offering residents a four-day break from March 19 to March 22.

  • If the moon is not sighted, Ramadan will complete 30 days, and Eid will begin on March 20, resulting in a three-day holiday from March 20 to March 22.

How residents can enjoy a 9-day break

Even if Eid begins on March 20, residents can extend their holiday with smart planning. By taking annual leave from March 16 to March 19 (Monday to Thursday), employees can combine weekends and Eid holidays to enjoy a nine-day vacation from Saturday, March 14 to Sunday, March 22.

As Ramadan begins, the festive spirit and anticipation of Eid holidays are already being felt across the UAE, with residents preparing for a month of devotion followed by a well-deserved break.
