UAE approves first hybrid heliport design

New hybrid heliport at Zayed Port to serve helicopters, eVTOLs as Abu Dhabi gears up for 2026 air taxi launch

UAE Approves Nation’s First Hybrid Heliport, Paving Way for Air Taxi Revolution in Abu Dhabi

The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) announced on April 23 the approval of the design for the country’s first hybrid heliport, a major step forward in Abu Dhabi’s ambitious air mobility plans.
A key component of the upcoming Abu Dhabi Air Taxi project, the heliport is situated near the Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal at Zayed Port, a significant hub that receives over 650,000 tourists a year.

The hybrid heliport, created in partnership with AD Ports Group, Falcon Aviation Services, and Archer Aviation, is intended to accommodate both traditional helicopters and the upcoming electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. This dual-purpose facility is part of Archer’s broader strategy to establish an advanced infrastructure network across the UAE, with commercial air taxi operations expected to launch in 2026 alongside Abu Dhabi Aviation (ADA).

Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the GCAA, praised the milestone, stating, “This approval signals a transformative shift for civil aviation, fueled by strong partnerships and a commitment to innovation. We are preparing for a future where sustainable air mobility seamlessly integrates into daily urban life.”

In a pioneering move, the GCAA also revealed that it is the first civil aviation authority globally to develop dedicated regulatory standards for hybrid infrastructure. These regulations, which are expected to be finalized by July 2025, will guarantee the safe and efficient operation of eVTOLs and helicopters from common platforms.

Leaders in the industry were excited about the project’s development. “Leveraging existing aviation infrastructure will accelerate the safe rollout of air taxi services,” said Archer CEO Adam Goldstein, while Falcon Aviation Services CEO Captain Ramandeep Oberoi underlined the importance of transforming the current heliport into a state-of-the-art hybrid site. The updated facility would further solidify Abu Dhabi’s leadership in the cruise tourist and urban air mobility industries, said Noura Rashed Al Dhaheri, CEO of Cruise Business at AD Ports Group.

The Abu Dhabi Air Taxi service, set to launch by 2026, promises a new era of fast, sustainable, and efficient transportation for residents and visitors across the emirate.
