India-UAE Ties: A Timeless Friendship Beyond Business

A partnership rooted in legacy, growing through trust and shared progress

India-UAE: A Timeless Bond Forged Through Trust, Trade, and Shared Vision

When we talk about India, we’re talking about a group that is like family, not simply a nation. The people of India and the United Arab Emirates have been walking hand in hand for millennia, not only in trade but also in culture, trust, and vision. With more than 3.8 million Indians living in the United Arab Emirates today, this connection is more than just friendship—it is a part of their legacy.

Our relationship spans centuries, from historic sea routes to the vibrant vitality of contemporary cities. Archaeologists have discovered 3,000-year-old Indian beads and pottery in the center of Dubai, demonstrating that our history predates boundaries and contemporary diplomacy.

Generations of UAE leaders — from Sheikh Saeed to Sheikh Rashid to today’s visionary leadership under Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum — have cherished and nurtured this bond. These ties go far beyond state visits and economic deals. They are personal, built on mutual respect and a shared journey.

My family, the Al Maktoum family, has always felt at home in India. My great-grandfather often travelled there for medical reasons and found comfort in the warmth of Indian hospitality. In the 1960s, my grandfather granted one of the first Indian business licences in Bur Dubai — a seed that grew into today’s thriving Indian business presence across the Emirates.

India brings immense scale and ambition; the UAE offers agility and execution. We’ve come up with a dynamic formula for success together. With bilateral trade surpassing $84.5 billion and steadily increasing toward $100 billion, our Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) has laid a solid foundation. The UAE’s $75 billion investment in India’s infrastructure demonstrates our mutual optimism for development and advancement.

This is not solely an economic story, though. It is profoundly human, intellectual, and cultural.

Today, Indian institutions like IIT Delhi and IIM Ahmedabad have chosen the UAE as their international base, cementing our role as a global hub for knowledge. Indian professionals have long boosted our schools and hospitals. And the sounds of Bollywood, the thrill of IPL cricket, and the cozy scent of karak chai—a representation of everyday life as familiar as our traditional gahwa—reverberate throughout our cities, from Abu Dhabi to Sharjah.

From agricultural security to financial innovation, from artificial intelligence to aerospace, our countries are advancing together. Our youth view one another as equals, not simply partners, in building the future, and our fintech industries and space agencies work together.

As the UAE plots its course for Centennial 2071 and India aims for Viksit Bharat 2047, one thing is certain: our fates are connected. It’s not your typical partnership. In addition to ambition, this journey is based on common values and aspirations.

Not just over the water, but across hearts as well, we continue the heritage of those who constructed this bridge.
