UAE Exploring Business Opportunities in Tamil Nadu
New Delhi: The UAE is actively seeking to expand its business and investment footprint in southern India. A high-profile delegation led by UAE Economy Minister Abdulla bin Touq Al-Marri visited Tamil Nadu, emphasizing the growing economic ties between the UAE and India. The visit focused on key sectors such as logistics, advanced industries, and entrepreneurship, aiming to explore new partnerships and investment opportunities.
Welcoming the Emirati Delegation
Accompanied by Minister of State for Entrepreneurship Alia Abdulla Al-Mazrouei and prominent members of the Emirati business community, Al-Marri’s mission is to forge new partnerships at both government and private sector levels. Their focus is on exploring opportunities in logistics, advanced industries, and supporting the growth of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
Upon arrival, Al-Marri and his delegation received a warm welcome from Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. The chief minister praised the UAE minister as a “great friend and well-wisher” of the state. Stalin shared this sentiment via social media, highlighting the productive discussions on potential business and investment collaborations.
Key Discussion Points
“During our meeting, we discussed business and investment partnerships in sectors such as logistics, retail, affordable housing, and food processing, with a particular focus on MSMEs and job creation,” Stalin stated. These discussions aim to create robust economic linkages that benefit both regions.
Investopia Global Talks Initiative
The delegation’s visit also included organizing networking sessions under the Investopia Global Talks initiative, held in Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu. This initiative, a brainchild of the UAE government, seeks to bring together investors, business leaders, and government officials to foster dialogue and collaboration.
Visit to IIT-Madras
One of the highlights of the visit was the delegation’s trip to the Indian Institute of Technology–Madras (IIT-Madras), one of India’s premier engineering institutions. Here, they explored the institute’s cutting-edge research facilities and start-up incubation ecosystem, which are critical components of Tamil Nadu’s innovation landscape.
“It has been a great few days to be here. Tamil Nadu is one of the biggest states that we are focusing on in the UAE,” Al-Marri remarked to reporters. “We have a delegation of large corporations and small and medium enterprises. Now, it’s time for business-to-business to create more deals and partnerships.” His comments reflect the UAE’s strategic interest in leveraging Tamil Nadu’s economic strengths for mutual benefit.
Tamil Nadu’s Economic Strengths
Tamil Nadu holds a pivotal position in India’s economy. It is the second-largest exporter of software services in the country, trailing only Karnataka. The state is also renowned for its robust automobile and engineering industries. Manufacturing accounts for 33 percent of Tamil Nadu’s GDP, while agriculture contributes 13 percent, highlighting a diverse economic base.
Focus on SMEs
Moreover, Tamil Nadu is home to approximately 1.9 million SMEs, which form the backbone of its economy. These small and medium enterprises are crucial for job creation and economic development, making them a focal point for potential UAE investments. The state’s emphasis on innovation and entrepreneurship aligns with the UAE’s vision for fostering sustainable economic growth.
The UAE delegation’s visit to Tamil Nadu marks a significant step in strengthening bilateral economic relations. By focusing on key sectors and fostering public-private partnerships, both regions stand to gain from enhanced trade, investment, and economic collaboration. The visit underscores the UAE’s commitment to exploring new avenues for economic cooperation and building lasting partnerships with India.
