UAE Raises Dh200m for Lebanon, Sends 6,000 Tonnes of Aid Amid Humanitarian Crisis

The UAE’s humanitarian movement in support of Lebanon has raised nearly 200 million dirhams, delivering 6,000 tonnes of vital aid to civilians bearing the brunt of the deadly conflict, it was announced on Monday.

The UAE Stands with Lebanon campaign was established in October to show solidarity with the Lebanese people during the Israeli military ground invasion and continuous airstrikes, which resulted in thousands of deaths, the displacement of more than a million people and the widespread destruction of public buildings and homes.

In the effort, which concluded last week, the public made financial pledges through the website of the government’s charity, the Emirates Red Crescent, and several UAE banks affiliated with the campaign.

Thousands of people attended aid events held across the country to provide essential supplies to civilians who lost their lives in the war.

Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed, Vice President of the Presidential Court for Development and Fallen Heroes Affairs, Chairman of the International Philanthropy and Humanitarian Council, and member of the Board of Trustees of the Erth Zayed Philanthropy, said that the overwhelming public support demonstrated the country’s humanitarian values and its leadership.

Sheikh Theyab thanked all segments of society for their contributions to the cause in recent months.

The UAE initially provided $100 million in emergency help, along with $30 million for Lebanese citizens who were displaced in Syria.

In cooperation with pertinent Lebanese and international authorities, including the World Health Organization, the United Nations Children’s Fund, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, a total of 22 planes and two ships were sent out over the last three months.

Joseph Aoun, the head of the army, was chosen as the leader of the Lebanese parliament on Thursday. With a 60-day ceasefire concluding on January 26 and a power vacuum that has existed since 2022, post-war reconstruction activities are starting to take shape.

The United Arab Emirates said it would reopen its embassy in the capital of Lebanon after three years of closure, and President Sheikh Mohammed hailed the new leader over the phone on Saturday.

Sheikh Mohammed wished Gen. Aoun well in leading Lebanon and fulfilling the aspirations of its citizens for stability and advancement.

During the call, the two presidents agreed to reopen the UAE embassy in Beirut.

Sheikh Mohamed underlined the UAE’s commitment to supporting efforts to maintain the security and stability of Lebanon.
