Emirates Suspends Flights to Dhaka Amid Ongoing Civil Unrest in Bangladesh
Dubai-headquartered Emirates Airlines has announced the suspension of flights to and from Dhaka due to the continuing civil unrest in Bangladesh. The airline has cancelled the following flights scheduled for August 5 and 6:
- EK587 on August 5 – Dhaka to Dubai
- EK584 on August 5 – Dubai to Dhaka
- EK585 on August 6 – Dhaka to Dubai
- EK582 on August 6 – Dubai to Dhaka
- EK583 on August 6 – Dhaka to Dubai
In an update regarding the travel disruptions, Emirates stated that customers who were scheduled to connect to flights bound for Dhaka on August 6 will not be accepted for travel from their departure points. The airline emphasized that they are closely monitoring the situation in Bangladesh and are prepared to adjust their services as needed.
For passengers who booked their flights directly with Emirates, the airline has advised them to contact their local Emirates office for rebooking options or alternative travel arrangements. Passengers who booked their flights through travel agents are encouraged to reach out to their agents for assistance with rebooking or other travel solutions.
To keep updated on flight status and any changes, Emirates recommends that passengers visit the ‘Manage Your Booking’ page on their website. This resource will provide the most current information regarding flight schedules and travel options.
Flydubai’s Similar Measures
In addition to Emirates, Flydubai, another major Dubai-based airline, has also taken precautionary measures by cancelling flights to two key destinations in Bangladesh—Dhaka Airport (DAC) and Chattogram Airport (CGP)—until August 7. Flydubai has issued a statement confirming that they are in contact with passengers to provide rebooking or refund options. The airline is also closely monitoring the ongoing situation and advises passengers to frequently check the Flight Status for the latest updates.
Context of the Civil Unrest
The current civil unrest in Bangladesh has been a significant and troubling development. The unrest erupted following the resignation and subsequent departure of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled the country after a 15-year rule. This dramatic political shift occurred after widespread protests on Sunday, which tragically resulted in nearly 100 deaths. The protests were initially sparked by the reintroduction of job quotas for highly coveted civil service positions, which had been previously abolished.
The Supreme Court’s removal of these quotas did not quell the unrest, as protests resumed with demonstrators demanding justice for those affected by the violence and disruptions. The situation has led to a nationwide internet blackout, disruption of telecommunication services, and the imposition of a curfew. The military has been deployed to manage and contain the growing unrest, but the violence and instability have persisted.
Impact on Bangladeshi Expats
For Bangladeshi expatriates in the UAE, the situation has caused significant distress. Many have been unable to communicate with their families due to the disruptions in telecommunication services. The uncertainty and fear for their loved ones’ safety have been exacerbated by the prolonged silence and lack of information.
Advice from Bangladeshi Missions
In response to the ongoing instability, Bangladeshi missions in the UAE have issued advisories urging their citizens to exercise “utmost restraint” and comply with local laws. The missions are also providing guidance and support to those affected by the flight cancellations and other disruptions.
Legal Actions in the UAE
The situation has also had legal repercussions in the UAE. Last month, three Bangladeshi nationals were sentenced to life imprisonment, while 54 others were sentenced to deportation after serving prison terms. These individuals were convicted of inciting riots in the UAE as a means of exerting pressure on the Bangladeshi government. This development underscores the complex and multifaceted nature of the ongoing crisis and its impact on both domestic and international levels.
As the situation continues to evolve, both airlines and expatriates remain vigilant, hoping for a resolution to the unrest and a return to stability in Bangladesh.
