UAE Minister and Tamil Nadu Health Minister Connect Through Shared Passion for Walking
Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri and Ma Subramanian Jog Together in Chennai, Boosting Fitness and Diplomacy

UAE Minister and Tamil Nadu Health Minister Strengthen Ties Through Shared Passion for Running
Chennai: The convergence of fitness and diplomacy was exemplified when UAE Economy Minister Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri and Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian, united by their shared passion for running, took to the exclusive walking track on the streets of Chennai on Wednesday.
A Meeting of Minds and Fitness
Al Marri, currently on an official visit to foster trade relations between Tamil Nadu and the UAE, seized the opportunity to jog with Subramanian, an avid runner who has completed over 140 marathons. The duo commenced their run from Muthulakshmi Reddy Park in Adyar and concluded at Besant Nagar, covering an impressive distance of approximately 6 kilometers.
Shared Passion for Fitness
During their meeting, Al Marri shared his enthusiasm for fitness and his routine of running every morning, regardless of his location. Subramanian, in turn, recounted his daily 12-km walk. This mutual interest in physical fitness led to their decision to run together through the streets of Chennai, a gesture that left the visiting minister pleasantly surprised by the city’s dedicated walking track.
Chennai’s Dedicated Walking Track
The walking track, inspired by a similar initiative in Tokyo, was established by the Tamil Nadu government last year. The 8-km stretch in Chennai was designated as an exclusive walking track with the goal of encouraging residents to walk daily and thereby reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. Furthermore, the Health Department has introduced Health Walk Tracks in all 38 district headquarters, with officials joining the public for walks on the first Sunday of every month.
Impressions and Innovations
Subramanian expressed the visiting minister’s admiration for the walking track, noting the thoughtful additions of selfie points, wall drawings, motivational quotes about the benefits of walking, and resting chairs along the route. “Although I walk the 8-km stretch almost weekly, sharing this experience with a minister from another country was truly enjoyable. We hope more residents will take advantage of this wonderful facility in Chennai,” Subramanian remarked.
A Token of Appreciation
In a gesture of goodwill, Industries Minister TRB Raaja presented Al Marri with a pair of walking shoes crafted at the footwear SEZ in Cheyyar, underscoring Tamil Nadu’s emergence as a significant hub for non-leather footwear manufacturing in India.
Commitment to Fitness
For 64-year-old Subramanian, marathons and physical exercise are a lifelong passion, with his commitment to fitness being well-documented.
Promoting Health Through Walking
The ‘Health Walk’ initiative is one of several announcements made by Subramanian in April while presenting the Demands for Grants for the Health Department. The government’s objective is to promote walking among the populace, as numerous studies have shown that physical activity can reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases by 30 percent and diabetes by 27 percent.
This unique blend of fitness and diplomacy not only underscores the importance of health and well-being but also highlights the potential for shared interests to bridge cultural and international divides, fostering stronger ties and mutual respect between nations.
