UAE Mosque Named After Indonesian President Widodo Now Open to the Public

As part of the opening ceremony, minister plants a mango tree

In a significant gesture of friendship and cultural exchange, a newly constructed mosque, named in honor of Indonesian President Joko Widodo, has been officially unveiled to the public in the diplomatic area of Abu Dhabi.

The Mosque of President Joko Widodo, situated on the street bearing the Indonesian president’s name, represents a symbol of the strong bond between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Indonesia. The construction of this impressive mosque commenced in 2021 and reached completion in October, boasting the capacity to accommodate up to 2,500 worshippers.

The inauguration ceremony, a momentous occasion, was officiated by Suhail Al Mazroei, the Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, alongside other esteemed officials. As part of the ceremonial proceedings, Minister Al Mazroei planted a mango tree, signifying growth, unity, and prosperity.

Ust. Salman Alfarisi, the Indonesian Imam, led the Zuhr prayer during the opening ceremony, drawing the attendance of the minister, distinguished envoys, prominent businessmen, leaders from the private sector, and members of the Indonesian expatriate community in the UAE.

Indonesian Ambassador to the UAE, Husin Bagis, highlighted the mosque’s symbolic importance, emphasizing its role as a testament to the robust brotherhood shared between the leaders of the two nations. He noted that this mosque stands as a counterpart to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Solo, Indonesia, inaugurated by President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan last year.

The reciprocal exchange of mosque inaugurations underscores the commitment to fostering mutual respect, understanding, and cultural appreciation between the UAE and Indonesia. Such initiatives not only serve as architectural marvels but also contribute to the broader narrative of global harmony and cooperation.

The Mosque of President Joko Widodo is poised to become a focal point for worship, reflection, and community engagement in Abu Dhabi, further enriching the diverse tapestry of religious and cultural landmarks in the vibrant diplomatic area. As it opens its doors to the public, the mosque is expected to play a vital role in fostering unity and friendship between the people of the UAE and Indonesia for years to come.
