UAE Cybersecurity Council Reports Surge in Internet Begging Cases in 2024

Authorities Identify Over 1,200 Cases, Urge Public Vigilance

The UAE Cyber Security Council reported over 1,200 instances of internet begging in 2024, with a notable surge in fraudulent contribution efforts using social media, particularly around Ramadan.

To prevent digital scams that influence people’s emotions and deceive them into making unapproved donations, authorities are stepping up their efforts.

Growing Threat of Digital Begging

Dr. Mohamed Al Kuwaiti, Head of Cybersecurity for the UAE Government, underscored the escalating risks associated with internet begging, where cybercriminals create fake accounts, use emotionally charged videos, and even deploy deepfake technology to impersonate real individuals.
These tactics are designed to exploit the generosity of unsuspecting users, often leading to financial fraud.

Since charity giving is more common during the holy month of Ramadan, scammers take advantage of people’s generosity by creating convincing but dishonest online donation requests. Numerous of these fraudulent schemes use phishing emails, instant messaging apps, and social media sites.

Measures to Protect Cyberspace and Combat Fraud

The UAE Cybersecurity Council is using cutting-edge security tools to track fraudulent financial transactions, detect suspicious activity, and spot phony accounts in an effort to combat these scams.

Authorities are working closely with financial institutions, law enforcement agencies, and cybersecurity specialists to dismantle these networks and take legal action against offenders.

In addition to blocking suspicious accounts, cybersecurity teams are continuously monitoring digital platforms to prevent the spread of deceptive campaigns. Advanced artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms examine patterns of activity to identify fraudulent donation drives before they have a chance to spread.

Public Advised to Stay Cautious and Report Scams

Residents have been advised by Dr. Al Kuwaiti to exercise caution and confirm the veracity of any online donation request before making a contribution.
He underlined that only platforms authorized by the government and publicly recognized charitable groups should receive donations.

The Cyber Security Council has warned the public not to interact with unverified accounts or click on links from unidentified sources. Authorities have also expressed concern about phishing tactics that use fake donation appeals to obtain private funds and personal data.

To help combat cyber fraud, residents are urged to report any questionable online solicitation activities to authorities. The council assures the public that it remains committed to strengthening cyber security measures to protect people and businesses from online dangers.
