Dubai Supreme Council of Energy Strengthens Green Economy Initiatives
The 87th virtual meeting of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy was chaired by H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum. Key participants in the meeting included Vice Chairman Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Secretary-General Ahmed Buti Al Muhairbi, and Acting Director-General Marwan bin Ghalita of the Dubai Municipality.
Improving Dubai’s environmental framework and cementing its position as a leader in the energy transition were key topics of discussion. Dubai remains committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, in line with national and international sustainability goals.
One of the key subjects was the improvement of Dubai’s green building laws. These rules aim to reduce carbon emissions by making new construction more energy and water efficient. By implementing these safeguards, Dubai hopes to ensure that future developments are consistent with sustainability and environmental protection objectives.
The legal framework governing the sale of petroleum products is another important area of focus. The Council considered Executive Committee Resolution No. 16 of 2019, which established a special committee to monitor the industry. Risk management, safety practices and compliance of petroleum distributors have all improved as a result of this project.
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer reaffirmed Dubai’s unwavering commitment to sustainable development, stating:
“Guided by the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai continues its transformation towards a green economy. The implementation of stricter petroleum trade governance and updated Green Building requirements demonstrates our proactive approach to sustainability. These programs guarantee Dubai’s continued leadership in renewable energy and environmental conservation on a worldwide scale.
The significance of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050 was also emphasized by him. With the help of these plans, the Emirate hopes to strengthen its position in the global energy revolution by becoming entirely dependent on sustainable energy sources by 2050.
Ahmed Buti Al Muhairbi highlighted the role of specialised inspection teams and structured regulatory frameworks in maintaining high standards of sustainability and safety. He stated:
“Through focused action plans and strong governance measures, we are enhancing Dubai’s leadership in energy management. Our objectives are to provide sustainability, security, and long-term economic resilience.
Throughout the summit, Dubai’s all-encompassing approach to achieving its objectives for environmental and economic sustainability was emphasized. Dubai keeps up its reputation as a leader in energy management and sets the bar for sustainable urban development both inside and outside the region by fusing progressive legislation with creative green projects.
