Russia and UAE Strengthen Parliamentary Dialogue Amid Growing BRICS Cooperation

In a high-level meeting held in St. Petersburg, Valentina Matvienko, Chairman of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation, met with Saqr Ghobash, Chairman of the Federal National Council of the United Arab Emirates, to discuss deepening inter-parliamentary ties and expanding strategic cooperation between the two nations.

In light of BRICS expansion, Matvienko emphasized the significance of strengthening legislative cooperation, citing the UAE’s recent admission as a major chance for wider participation. She pointed out that BRICS’s parliamentary component is growing in importance and that member state parliamentarians are essential to determining the organization’s direction and promoting common goals.
The summit underlined the strong and expanding cooperation between Russia and the UAE, supported by regular communication between heads of state, government institutions, parliaments and the private sector. The two leaders expressed optimism about the future of their bilateral relations, given the ongoing discussions on an Economic Partnership Agreement between the UAE and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

Cooperation in the fields of culture, education and humanitarian affairs also played a significant role in the conversation. Matvienko and Ghobash underlined the importance of supporting educational exchange programs and cultural activities to build a foundation for long-term personal relations and understanding.

In addition to expressing gratitude to Ghobash for his tireless efforts to advance UAE-Russia relations, the UAE side expressed its gratitude to Matvienko for Russia’s steadfast support throughout the UAE’s BRICS integration. Speaker Ghobash formally invited Matvienko to the UAE.

A general commitment to increase cooperation in the political, economic and social spheres – both within the BRICS framework and through expanded bilateral channels – was made at the end of the debate.
