UAE and Indonesia partner to reduce ocean and river waste pollution
Memorandum of Understanding Signed to Mitigate Environmental Impact Through Collaborative Efforts

UAE and Indonesia Forge Alliance to Combat Plastic Pollution in Oceans
The cooperative efforts between the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) of the UAE and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Investment of Indonesia, as detailed in the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed at The AVPN Global Conference 2024 in Abu Dhabi, represent a significant stride towards addressing one of the most pressing global environmental issues: plastic pollution in our oceans.
At its core, this partnership emphasizes the shared commitment of both nations to combat plastic waste leakage into Indonesian waters. By formalizing this agreement, the UAE and Indonesia are acknowledging the urgency of the situation and taking concrete steps to mitigate its environmental impact.
The MoU lays the groundwork for cooperative endeavors to deploy nature-based solutions in combating climate change challenges, particularly focusing on the environmental ramifications of plastic waste. It builds upon existing initiatives such as the Mangrove Alliance for Climate (MAC) and the MBZ-JKW International Mangrove Research Center, demonstrating a commitment to leveraging ongoing efforts for greater impact.
Key to this partnership is the establishment of a framework for cooperation that encompasses various areas, including capacity building, stakeholder awareness, and the development of economically sustainable waste management systems. By pooling resources and expertise, both countries aim to implement effective measures to curb plastic pollution in rivers and oceans.
The launch of Clean Rivers, a global non-profit based in Abu Dhabi dedicated to combating river plastic pollution, serves as a significant milestone in this endeavor. As the official implementing partner of the MoU, Clean Rivers will play a crucial role in executing transformative programs aimed at addressing riverine plastic pollution in Indonesia and beyond. This underscores the importance of public-private partnerships in tackling complex environmental challenges.
The commitment to preventing 300,000 tonnes of plastic waste from entering the ocean annually reflects the dedication of Clean Rivers and its partners to environmental sustainability and community empowerment. Moreover, the exchange of information and best practices facilitated by this collaboration will enable both countries to implement evidence-based solutions for long-term impact.
This initiative not only underscores the UAE’s commitment to global environmental stewardship but also reflects its proactive approach to addressing pressing environmental challenges through international cooperation and innovative solutions. By working together, the UAE and Indonesia are setting an example for other nations to follow in the fight against plastic pollution and the preservation of marine ecosystems.
