UAE Achieves Milestone with First Simultaneous Robotic Kidney Transplant

ABU DHABI: In a significant milestone, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has performed the first simultaneous robotic kidney transplant using a single robot for donor and recipient.

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, a part of the M42 Group, in collaboration with the team of experts at Cleveland Clinic in the US, performed the groundbreaking surgery.

The Abu Dhabi Media Office (ADMO) reported that Abu Dhabi’s Department of Health (DoH)’s continued efforts in the field of organ transplantation by integrating best practices, science and technology demonstrate this achievement and highlight Abu Dhabi’s potential to become a global health hub. Tuesday 20 August.

The procedure involved two related UAE nationals, a donor and a recipient, with the recipient diagnosed with end-stage renal failure. Dr. George Haber, CEO of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi presided.

The surgical team coordinated with the transplant team and performed the procedures simultaneously in separate operating rooms using a single robot.

A minimally invasive procedure offers many advantages, including less trauma, less blood loss, and faster recovery.

Dr Rasheed Obaid Alsuwaidi of the Department of Health, Abu Dhabi, celebrated this milestone in organ transplantation and highlighted the exceptional healthcare workforce in the emirate.

Dr. George Haber, CEO of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, highlighted the importance of collaboration in medical advancement and the significant milestone achievement in the advancement of healthcare.

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, the first multi-organ transplant facility in the UAE, has successfully performed seven donor surgeries with the help of a robot. Now plans to develop robotic technology beyond kidney transplants.
