UAE-Led Operation Uncovers Extensive Environmental Crimes in Amazon Basin, Seizes $32 Million Worth of Goods
DUBAI: Operation “Green Justice,” spearheaded by the UAE, has brought to light significant environmental criminal activities within the Amazon Basin. This comprehensive operation resulted in the seizure of illegal items valued at $32 million and led to the arrest of 25 individuals suspected of being involved in these crimes.
Operation “Green Justice” was meticulously planned to target and dismantle criminal networks responsible for severe environmental violations across the Amazon Basin. The initiative represented a significant blow to organized crime groups operating in this ecologically critical region. According to reports from state-run WAM, the operation has had a considerable impact on curbing illegal activities in the area.
The operation was a collaborative effort that saw participation from various regional law enforcement agencies, including those from the UAE, Brazil, Peru, and Colombia. Additionally, international organizations played a crucial role in this mission. The UN Office on Drugs and Crime and the Environmental Systems Research Institute were key contributors to the operation, enhancing its effectiveness through their expertise and resources.
The mission was coordinated by the International Initiative of Law Enforcement for Climate, reflecting a unified global approach to tackling environmental crimes. This initiative underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing the complex challenges posed by environmental crime and protecting the world’s natural resources.
Throughout the operation, authorities made significant seizures. The confiscated items included 2.4 tonnes of goods related to illegal wildlife trafficking and marine catches. Additionally, 37 pieces of illegal fishing equipment, 229 items associated with illegal mining activities, and more than 10,498 cubic meters of illicitly cut wood were seized. The total estimated value of these illegal goods was over $32 million, highlighting the scale of the criminal activities being targeted.
The outcome of Operation “Green Justice” was marked by the charging of 25 suspects with a range of environmental crimes. These charges reflect the seriousness of the offenses and the commitment of the participating agencies to enforcing environmental regulations and laws.
