UAE and Brazil Deepen Strategic Dialogue at FGV Fireside Chat on BRICS 2025 and Future Cooperation

Rio de Janeiro – In a significant step toward strengthening international partnerships, the Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV), in collaboration with the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Brazil, hosted an exclusive fireside chat featuring Her Excellency Reem Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation.
The event, which took place at FGV’s headquarters, was a part of a larger effort to investigate multilateral collaboration within the BRICS framework and strengthen the UAE-Brazil connection.

The event, titled BRICS & Beyond: A High-Level Dialogue, brought together a remarkable group of students, business leaders, academics, diplomats, and officials. The UAE’s growing involvement in BRICS and the promising future of its strategic partnerships with Brazil—particularly in fields like commerce, renewable energy, technology, and sustainable development—were the main topics of discussion.

Her Excellency Reem Al Hashimy shared the UAE’s vision for fostering inclusive, innovation-driven growth and emphasized the country’s commitment to cross-cultural collaboration. She highlighted the UAE’s role as a leading advocate of multilateralism, and the importance of communication and common policies in building lasting global alliances.

In his speech, H.E. Al Hashimy reiterated that the UAE believes that BRICS is an important forum for developing countries to influence global economic governance and promote peace and stability. He underlined that the UAE’s involvement in BRICS is consistent with its comprehensive foreign policy, which places great value on cooperative participation in multilateral fora and strategic partnerships that transcend conventional geopolitical boundaries.

As part of the discussion, Her Excellency the President highlighted several bilateral initiatives already underway between Brazil and the UAE. These include partnerships in green technologies, solar energy, and strategic mineral processing. The upcoming MoU, scheduled for January 2025, aims to facilitate investment, technical cooperation and knowledge exchange in sectors that emphasize sustainability, a key highlight.

H.E. Al Hashimy reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to triple the world’s renewable energy capacity by 2030 in his remarks on the global climate agenda. This objective is based on the UAE consensus agreed at COP28 in Dubai. She pointed out that this climate vision creates new opportunities for cooperation between the UAE and Brazil in the fields of renewable energy, essential minerals and eco-innovation.

She also stressed the fundamental role of one-on-one communication in diplomacy, citing professional, educational and cultural exchange initiatives as engines of long-term bilateral cooperation. He said that these projects help to establish lasting alliances and deeper understanding between countries.

Catherine Osborn, a foreign policy journalist and foreign correspondent based in Brazil, moderated the discussion. FGV President Carlos Ivan Simonsen Leal delivered the opening remarks and emphasized the value of academic and institutional collaboration in addressing global issues. He praised FGV’s expanding role as a hub for intellectual diplomacy and policy debates.

Marlos Lima, Director of International Affairs at FGV, echoed these sentiments, saying that forums such as these lively dialogues provide aspiring leaders with the ideals and information they need to address complex international situations. He emphasized the importance of international education and communication in solving common problems, along with technical knowledge and moral leadership.

In addition to being a significant turning point in Brazil-UAE relations, the event also reflected the two countries’ aspirations to build an integrated, resilient and connected global community.
