Pakistani Mangoes Arrive in UAE: Any Price Drops This Year?

First Consignments of Sindhri Variety Land Despite Lower Production and Increased Costs

The arrival of Pakistani mangoes in the UAE is a much-anticipated event, marking the beginning of a season celebrated by fruit enthusiasts. This year, the first consignments arrived last week, bringing in a significant quantity despite the challenges posed by climate change and economic factors.

Supply and Demand Dynamics

Pakistani mangoes, particularly the Sindhri and Chanusa varieties, are highly sought after for their unique flavor, high pulp content, and sweet aroma. These qualities make them a favorite among consumers worldwide. The Sindhri variety, which was part of the initial shipment, is known for its rich taste and succulent texture, enhancing its popularity.

Initial Shipments and Export Timing: The export season officially began on May 20, 2024, and the first shipment arrived on May 23. This initial shipment included about 192 containers, totaling around 4,600 tonnes of mangoes. Mustafa Altaf, the managing director of Altaf Hussain Trading Co., highlighted that this volume is substantial for the season’s start, aiming to meet the high early demand in the UAE market. Exporters prioritize early shipments to capitalize on this demand before focusing on other markets later in the season.

Impact of Climate Change on Production: Climate change has significantly impacted mango production in Pakistan. Erratic weather patterns, unseasonal rains, and temperature fluctuations have led to lower yields compared to previous years. Mustafa Altaf pointed out that while the quantity is less than expected, the quality remains high due to favorable conditions this year, with no unseasonal rains affecting the crop.

Higher Prices and Economic Factors: The prices of mangoes this year are slightly elevated due to inflation in Pakistan and increased freight charges. Freight rates, which have risen from Rs280 to Rs320, are expected to climb by an additional 2 to 5 percent in the coming months. Mustafa Altaf mentioned that a 6kg box of Sindhri mangoes is currently sold for Dh28-30 in the wholesale market, reflecting these cost increases.

Quality Assurance and Market Reception

Quality of Mangoes: Despite the lower yields, the mangoes reaching the UAE are of excellent quality. Both Mustafa Altaf and Gulraiz Yaseen, managing director of the Pakistan Supermarket chain in the UAE, affirmed that the mangoes are in prime condition. Yaseen added that the quality would only improve as the season progresses, ensuring that consumers get the best possible product.

Strategic Export Plans: The strategic approach of exporters involves a heavy initial supply to the UAE market, followed by a gradual shift to other international markets such as Europe and the US. This approach ensures that the UAE market receives ample supply during the peak demand period at the start of the season.

Consumer Expectations: Pakistani mangoes have a dedicated fan base in the UAE, and the arrival of these mangoes is eagerly awaited each year. The unique taste and high quality of the mangoes ensure strong consumer demand, despite the higher prices. The assurance of quality from established traders like Altaf Hussain Trading Co. and Pakistan Supermarket helps maintain consumer trust and satisfaction.

Future Outlook

Sustainability and Adaptation: The ongoing impact of climate change on mango production is a concern that needs addressing through sustainable farming practices and adaptation strategies. Efforts to mitigate these effects will be crucial for maintaining the supply and quality of Pakistani mangoes in the future.

Market Dynamics: The increasing freight charges and inflationary pressures in Pakistan suggest that prices may continue to rise. However, the high demand and consumer willingness to pay for quality mangoes indicate a robust market. Exporters will need to balance these economic challenges with the need to maintain competitive pricing.

Global Market Reach: As Pakistani mangoes gain popularity worldwide, the focus will expand beyond traditional markets. The increasing exports to Europe and the US highlight the growing global appreciation for these mangoes, promising new opportunities for Pakistani exporters.

In summary, the arrival of Pakistani mangoes in the UAE is a significant event marked by strong demand and high quality, despite challenges from climate change and economic factors. The strategic approach of exporters and the unwavering consumer enthusiasm ensure that these mangoes continue to be a beloved fruit in the UAE and beyond.
