Emirates and Jordan demand an end to hostilities and protection of civilians amid escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza

Jordan, UAE Condemn Israeli Attack on Gaza Hospital as War Crime

Jordan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Friday condemned the Israeli attack on the Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, where large areas were set on fire, and patients and displaced civilians were evacuated.

The Jordanian Foreign Ministry called the Israeli attack a “heinous war crime” that added to Israel’s ongoing crimes in Gaza and “a flagrant violation of international law and humanitarian law.”

It called on Israel to take responsibility for the safety of the hospital’s patients and medical staff, and urged the international community to pressure Israel to stop attacks on civilians in Gaza and end the “unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe caused by the Israeli occupation.”

The UAE Foreign Ministry also condemned the burning of parts of the hospital by Israeli forces.

A ministry statement reiterated the Gulf country’s “unequivocal rejection of this heinous act of violation of international humanitarian law and the systematic and despicable destruction of the remaining health system in the Strip.”

It called for an immediate halt to hostilities, and reiterated “the importance of protecting civilians and civilian institutions in accordance with international law.”

According to a source at the hospital, the Israeli military threatened the hospital’s director, Hossam Abu Safia, with arrest unless the medical facility was fully evacuated.

The source also confirmed that several patients died in the ICU after the Israeli military cut off their oxygen supply.

Israel launched a large-scale ground offensive in northern Gaza on October 5 in an attempt to prevent the Palestinian group Hamas from regrouping. However, Palestinians accuse Israel of occupying the area and seeking to forcibly evict its residents.

Since then, sufficient humanitarian aid, including food, medicine and fuel, has not been allowed into the area, and the remaining population is on the verge of imminent famine.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel has killed over 45,400 individuals in Gaza, leaving the region in ruins.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant were both wanted by the International Criminal Court last month for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Because of its attack on the area, Israel is also being sued for genocide at the International Court of Justice.
