UAE-India Partnership: Beyond Economic Cooperation
Emirates and India deepen ties in trade, culture, and innovation for a shared future

UAE-India: A Partnership Redefining Global Alliances
The relationship between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and India is a bright example of stability, advancement, and mutual development in the current unpredictable global environment. This partnership, which has its roots in a common history of trust and ideals, has developed into a complex alliance that extends beyond economic cooperation. It includes a common vision for global leadership, sustainable development, and innovation.
2024: A Defining Year for UAE-India Relations
The year 2024 marked a significant chapter in the UAE-India partnership, with high-level engagements that underscored their deep commitment. UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s visit to India in January, Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s visit in September, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reciprocal visit to the UAE exemplify the enduring nature of this bond.
These visits were not mere formalities but pivotal moments that set the stage for transformative collaborations. They reaffirmed the shared commitment to strengthening ties and shaping a future of mutual prosperity and innovation.
A Legacy of Diplomacy
This partnership carries a profound legacy of diplomacy, highlighted by the symbolic gestures of UAE leaders over generations. Beginning with the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in 1992, who planted an amaltas sapling at Rajghat in New Delhi, this tradition was continued by Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed in 2016 and most recently by Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed in 2024. These acts of planting saplings are more than ceremonial—they reflect the deep-rooted and growing relationship between the two nations.
Economic Synergies and Milestones
Economically, the UAE-India partnership has reached unparalleled heights. The Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), signed in 2022, has catalyzed trade and investment between the two countries. Bilateral trade reached nearly $84 billion in 2023-2024, making the UAE India’s second-largest export destination and third-largest trading partner. Both nations are now on track to surpass their ambitious target of $100 billion in non-oil trade by 2030.
Moreover, the UAE emerged as India’s fourth-largest foreign direct investor in 2023, with investments exceeding $3 billion—a threefold increase from the previous year. These investments span critical sectors like infrastructure, healthcare, real estate, and technology, showcasing the mutual trust and economic synergy between the two nations.
Cultural and Educational Bridges
The strength of the partnership is rooted in the relationships between individuals as much as the statistics. A key component of this relationship is the growing Indian community in the UAE. The shared commitment to cultural and educational cooperation is demonstrated by recent achievements such as the inauguration of the BAPS Hindu Mandir and the construction of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi campus in Abu Dhabi.
Another example of the partnership’s goal to enhance intellectual and cultural exchange and create a new era of bilateral cooperation is the planned India Foreign Trade Complex in Expo City Dubai.
Pioneering the Future
Both India and the UAE are looking to the future, concentrating on areas that will shape the ensuing decades. Cooperation in fields including semiconductor technology, genetic sequencing, supercomputing, and space exploration shows a common commitment to cutting-edge developments. Further demonstrating the countries’ dedication to sustainable and future-ready energy options are agreements in LNG supply and civil nuclear energy.
Increased interconnectedness via the aviation industry offers yet another opportunity for expansion. Improved air connections will expand trade and tourism while solidifying India and the United Arab Emirates as major international centers of innovation and business.
Global Cooperation and Vision
On the global stage, the UAE and India are working together to shape a more balanced and interconnected world. Their cooperation in organizations such as the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), G20, and BRICS highlights their common goal of world advancement. Their dedication to transcontinental economic connectivity and integration is further demonstrated by the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor.
Defence and Security Cooperation
Security and safety are important pillars of the partnership. In July 2024, the 12th Joint Security Cooperation Committee meeting focused on advancing joint military exercises, defense industrial partnerships, and counter-terrorism efforts. Together, the UAE and India address shared challenges such as cross-border terrorism and terrorist financing, and promoting global peace and security.
A Partnership for the 21st Century
The UAE-India alliance is not just a bilateral relationship – it is a blueprint for international cooperation in the modern era. From energy and artificial intelligence to education and security, this partnership demonstrates the transformative power of shared goals and mutual respect.
In an evolving world, the UAE and India are an example of how countries can work together to create a sustainable, innovative and prosperous future. This partnership, rooted in history and driven by a shared vision, is poised to lead the way in shaping an interconnected and harmonious world.
