Abu Dhabi: Indian Expatriate Population in GCC Surpasses 9 Million
The Indian expatriate population in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries has recently surpassed a significant milestone of 9 million. This notable achievement was announced by Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh during a parliamentary session. The growth in the Indian expatriate community reflects their substantial role and integration within the GCC region.
Diverse Employment Sectors
Indians contribute to a broad spectrum of employment sectors across the GCC. They are involved in high-skilled professions such as information technology, engineering, banking, and fintech. Their expertise also extends to the healthcare sector, where they work as doctors, nurses, and medical professionals. Additionally, many Indians work in essential services such as cleaning and domestic roles. This variety underscores the vital role that Indian workers play in both specialized and everyday functions within the GCC.
Population Distribution Across GCC Countries
The distribution of the Indian population across the GCC countries highlights regional differences in expatriate demographics. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) hosts the largest number of Indian nationals, totaling approximately 3.55 million. This substantial population size demonstrates the UAE’s prominence as a major destination for Indian expatriates seeking employment opportunities.
Following the UAE, Saudi Arabia has approximately 2.6 million Indians. This makes it the second-largest host country for Indian expatriates within the GCC. Kuwait ranks third with over 1.1 million Indians, reflecting its significant Indian community. Other GCC countries with notable Indian populations include Oman, with 779,000 Indians; Qatar, with 745,000; and Bahrain, with 323,000. The widespread presence of Indians across these countries indicates their integral role in the region’s socio-economic fabric.
Economic Impact and Wealth
India’s leading position in terms of the number of ultra-wealthy individuals residing in the GCC highlights the economic success and influence of Indian nationals in the region. This demographic of wealthy Indians contributes significantly to the local economies through investments, business ventures, and consumption. Their financial presence underscores the broader economic impact of the Indian expatriate community.
Immigration Clearance Updates
Regarding immigration, as of June 30 this year, 180,000 Indians received immigration clearance to work or reside in the GCC. This figure shows a decline from the 398,000 clearances granted in the previous year. The immigration clearance process is particularly crucial for individuals with educational qualifications below the 10th standard and those seeking employment in specific sectors, such as nursing. This regulatory process ensures that individuals meet the necessary qualifications and standards set by the GCC countries.
The substantial and growing Indian expatriate population in the GCC not only reflects historical ties but also highlights the ongoing contributions of Indians to the region. Their presence and participation in various sectors play a crucial role in shaping the workforce and economy of the Gulf countries. As the number of Indian nationals continues to rise, their impact on the GCC region remains significant and multifaceted.
