Ramadan 1446 AH Begins as Crescent Moon is Sighted Worldwide
On the evening of February 28, 2025, the crescent moon was sighted, officially marking the start of Ramadan 1446 AH. Beginning on March 1, 2025, Muslims in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, and a number of other nations reported seeing the moon.
Moon Sighting Variations Across Regions
In India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, the Philippines, and some other nations, the crescent moon was not sighted on February 28. As a result, these countries will complete 30 days of Sha’ban, and the first fast of Ramadan will be observed on March 2, 2025. In some areas, the special Taraweeh prayers, which start the night before the fast begins, will start on March 1.
Ramadan Fasting’s Significance
One of the five pillars of Islam is the practice of fasting during Ramadan. From sunrise to sunset, Muslims fast every day, abstaining from food, drink, tobacco, negative thoughts, and sexual interactions. It is considered a time for self-discipline, dedication, and introspection.
Social connection and spiritual growth
The primary objectives of Ramadan are to increase prayer, devotion, and self-purification. Muslims often recite the Quran and participate in additional midnight prayers called Taraweeh. Mosques provide a variety of services that encourage gatherings for prayer and reflection within communities.
In the Muslim world, the holy month promotes self-control, thankfulness, and a strong feeling of community—all of which aid in charitable giving and spiritual development.
