New Salik Toll Gates to Launch in Dubai: Key Details and Impact

Essential Information for Drivers:

Two new Salik gates are being added to major Dubai roads and will be operational as early as November this year.

First announced by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) on Friday 19 January, we will soon have to pay through certain points on Al Khail Road and Sheikh Zayed Road.

The first toll gate is at the Business Bay crossing on Al Khail Road. The second will be at Al Safa South Toll Gate, on Sheikh Zayed Road, between Al Maidan and Umm al-Sheif Street.

The good news is that if you cross two Safa gates (north and south) within an hour, you only pay once. This is also the case with the existing gates in Al Mamsar.

It costs Dh4 each time you drive through the Salik toll gate.

Now for what? This is to ease congestion on the roads so people who choose to travel by car can have a quicker, easier and traffic-free route (yikes).

Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors and Director General of the Roads and Transport Authority, explained when the gates were first announced that the gates will distribute traffic across the entire road network.

“Traffic toll policies encourage the public to shift to mass transport modes such as metro, buses, marine transport and soft mobility options,” he added.

The introduction of the new Salik gates is also expected to reduce travel time on Sheikh Zayed Road. For example, the Business Bay crossing gate is expected to reduce traffic by 15 percent on Al Khail Road and 16 percent on Al Ribat Street.

Al Safa South Gate is expected to reduce traffic by 15 percent from Sheikh Zayed Road turning right onto Al Maidan Street.

It is also expected to reduce traffic from Al Maidan and Al Safa Streets to Sheikh Zayed Road by 42 percent.

Al Tayer said the traffic volume on Sheikh Zayed Road between the Financial Center and Latifa Bint Hamdan Street will be reduced by 4 percent and the use of First Al Khail and Al Azael Roads will be optimized by up to 4 percent.

SALIC, Dubai’s road toll collection system, came into force in 2007. At present there are eight toll gates functioning around the city. Motorists are charged Dh4 to pass through each gate.
