Kolkata Port Launches Bengal Middle East Express Service to UAE

New Delhi: Kolkata’s Syama Prasad Mukherjee Port (SMP, Kolkata) on Thursday announced the launch of Bengal Middle East Express (BMEX), a new container vessel service connecting Haldia Dock Complex (HDC) with Jebel Ali Port in the UAE.

The BMEX service operates on the Haldia-Chittagong-Jebel Ali-Haldia route connecting Bengal and the industrial hub of eastern India with a major Middle East port.

The service aims to reduce travel time and costs for local exporters and importers by bypassing traditional transshipment ports, the port said in a statement.

By reducing delays, reducing operating costs and avoiding congestion, the BMEx route increases the efficiency, reliability and competitiveness of the supply chain and gives businesses better access to global markets, it added.

Launched by Singapore’s Ocean Salute Line in partnership with MBK Logistics, the BMEX service will improve global connectivity for the port. The inaugural vessel Yong Yu 11 will arrive at HDC on September 6, the statement said.

Port Chairman Rathendra Raman said that he is proud to introduce the Bengal Middle East Express service, which not only establishes a direct link between Haldia and Jebel Ali, but also opens up new avenues for trade and economic growth in the region.

“To support this initiative, the port has offered significant discounts on vessel-related charges to container ships calling directly from South East Asia, Far East and Middle East ports. This service is a testament to our commitment to enhance the competitiveness of our port. It also supports EXIM trade at a global level in the region,” he said.
