UAE Takes Part in UN SG’s Last CETM Panel Meeting in Kenya

In Nairobi, Kenya, the Critical Energy Transition Minerals (CETM) panel of the United Nations, together with government representatives, experts and organizations, was attended by the Minister of Energy, Sustainability, Abdullah Balala.

Since its launch in April 2024, the UN CETM panel has exchanged views on important files related to the mining sector, ensuring engagement and productive discussions in the development of global voluntary guiding principles on critical minerals.

In this last meeting, the members of the panel focused on the importance of establishing a strong foundation and international cooperation to achieve mutual and collective benefits related to the mining industry.

The urgent need to meet the 1.5 degree Celsius target, and global preparations to meet the net zero goal, Balala praised the findings of the UN panel, emphasizing the importance of improving the environmental response based on sustainable policies and practices. In a new era of climate action, protect local communities from any weather or environmental damage associated with the mining process.

In addition, he emphasized the importance of building trust at a broad level to achieve the desired transformational results and allow mineral-rich countries to create a favorable environment that enhances economic growth. He pointed out the importance of attracting responsible investment in mining, supporting these countries, improving their adaptation, and ensuring a smooth transition to renewable and clean energy.

The United Arab Emirates continues its commitment to climate action domestically and internationally through UNSG’s CETM panel, green investments, and global financial commitments. In light of this, the United Arab Emirates, based on the success of hosting COP28 in 2023, has announced that it will co-host the UN Water Conference in 2026 with Senegal.
