UAE Deports Student for ‘Free Palestine’ Chant Amid Israel-Hamas Conflict

Student Deported After Shouting "Free Palestine" at NYU Abu Dhabi Graduation Amid UAE-Israel Tensions

Protest at NYU Abu Dhabi Graduation

In May, during the graduation ceremony at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD), a student caused a stir by shouting “Free Palestine!” as he crossed the stage to receive his diploma. The student, who wore the traditional Palestinian black-and-white keffiyeh scarf, reportedly faced deportation from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) shortly after the incident.

UAE’s Diplomatic Balancing Act

The protest occurred at a time when the UAE is navigating a delicate diplomatic balance. The UAE officially recognizes Israel, but it also provides aid to Palestinians amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. The UAE, a federation of seven emirates, maintains tight control over political speech and public demonstrations. This control is evident in its approach to the Israel-Palestine issue, where public displays of support for Palestinians have been notably subdued compared to other Arab countries.

Restrictions Imposed at NYU Abu Dhabi

At NYUAD, the UAE’s restrictive policies extend into academic and cultural life. Students reported that activities related to the Israel-Hamas conflict were heavily monitored and restricted. Before the graduation ceremony, the university issued a directive prohibiting the display of the Palestinian flag and any cultural attire associated with Palestine, including the keffiyeh. This measure was part of a broader attempt to comply with local regulations and avoid controversy.

Criticism of NYUAD’s Response

The American Association of University Professors (AAUP) has criticized NYUAD for its handling of the situation. The AAUP alleged that the university failed to protect its students and staff from government interference. According to the AAUP, the university could not prevent the deportation of the student and other instances of government scrutiny. The organization also accused NYUAD of not adequately supporting its community in the face of such challenges.

Historical and Ongoing Criticisms

NYUAD has faced previous criticism regarding its labor practices related to campus construction. Reports indicated that migrant workers involved in building the campus experienced severe exploitation, including having to pay recruitment fees and living in overcrowded conditions. Despite an investigation and promises of reimbursement, some workers claimed they did not receive the compensation owed to them. This issue has cast a shadow over the university’s commitment to ethical practices.

UAE-Israel Relations and Domestic Policies

The UAE’s diplomatic relationship with Israel includes an Israeli consulate in Dubai and an embassy in Abu Dhabi. While the UAE maintains these diplomatic ties, it closely monitors and controls pro-Palestinian demonstrations. For instance, during the U.N. COP28 climate talks held in Dubai, security officials closely observed pro-Palestinian protests, which were only permitted within the U.N.-controlled “Blue Zone” at the event.

Impact of the Israel-Hamas Conflict

The Israel-Hamas conflict, which erupted on October 7 with a significant Hamas attack on Israel, has led to widespread casualties and destruction in Gaza. The conflict has resulted in significant loss of life and extensive damage to infrastructure. This ongoing situation complicates the UAE’s domestic policies and affects how the government manages related expressions and protests within its borders.
