Emirates Becomes the World’s First Autism-Certified Airline
Dubai-based Emirates sets a global standard in accessible travel with autism certification and innovative programs

Emirates Named World’s First Autism-Certified Airline
Emirates Airline, based in Dubai, became the first airline in the world to receive formal Autism Certification, marking a historic milestone. This honor comes after the airline successfully trained over 30,000 ground crew members and cabin crew members, guaranteeing that all employees are prepared to provide the required assistance and comprehension to guests with autism. The achievement is the result of a year-long collaboration with the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), which involved extensive evaluations and audits to create a comprehensive framework for accessible travel.
Promoting Autism Awareness through In-Flight Entertainment
Emirates has taken a proactive role in promoting autism awareness on a global scale. In April, the airline utilized its award-winning in-flight entertainment system, ice, to offer a curated selection of films and documentaries that highlight autism and neurodiversity. Passengers had access to titles like Temple Grandin, Ezra, The Flight of Bryan, and Inside Our Autistic Minds, as well as Carl the Collector, a cartoon about a raccoon with autism. In keeping with the airline’s goal of increasing awareness and fostering understanding, podcasts and documentaries highlighting Dubai’s dedication to autistic inclusion were also included.
Extension of the “Travel Rehearsal” Initiative
Also expanding is Emirates’ creative ‘travel rehearsal’ program, which debuted in Dubai in 2023. By introducing families and children with autism to airport procedures, this program reduces anxiety associated with travel. Since then, the program has spread to 17 cities across the world, including well-known places like Brisbane, Manchester, Paris, Barcelona, and Montreal. The trip rehearsal, which is organized in collaboration with government agencies and autism clinics, provides participants with assistance from qualified personnel as they navigate check-in, baggage drop, security screening, and boarding..
The program has been widely praised by parents, educators, and therapists for its positive impact. It has been described as “invaluable” in preparing children with autism for travel, ensuring they are familiar with the airport environment before their actual journey. Currently, these sessions are offered by invitation only and are held in collaboration with accredited autism centers.
Supporting Dubai’s Vision for an Accessible Future
Emirates’ initiatives complement Dubai’s overarching goal of being the world’s most accessible travel destination. A considerable portion of families with autistic relatives steer clear of travel since there is insufficient specialist support, per a survey conducted by AutismTravel.com. However, 94% of these families would be more likely to fly if airlines and travel staff received training on autism recognition and assistance. Emirates is setting a new standard for how airlines should accommodate travelers with neurodiverse requirements in addition to promoting accessible travel as the first airline in the world to obtain autism certification.
This initiative marks a significant breakthrough in inclusive travel by furthering Dubai’s mission to ensure that all visitors, regardless of their needs, may have a stress-free and seamless journey.
