Dubai to Open New Al Khail Road Bridge on October 13, Easing Deira Traffic

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has confirmed that a new 610m two-lane bridge between Al Maydan Street and Ras Al Khor Street intersection towards Deira will open on Sunday.

This is the fourth bridge on the busy Al Khail Road to be opened as part of the major Al Khail Road Development Project, which will include 3,300-metre-long bridges and widening lanes over 6,820 metres.

As the final stages of the new bridge were being completed on Saturday, Hamad Al Shehhi, director of RDA’s Transport and Roads Agency: The new bridge, which will be opened on October 13, will have a capacity of up to 3,200 vehicles per hour. Connects traffic from Meydan Street to Al Khail Road towards Deira.

Surface road improvements of 1,550 meters have also been made to connect traffic from Al Khail Road towards Ras Al Khor Street.

Another traffic problem solved by the new bridge is the elimination of weavers – or motorists swerving from one lane to the next lane – as there will now be separate lanes and alternate lanes for those heading towards Terah. Ross Algor goes.

30% reduction in travel time
Al Shehhi noted that the Al Khail Road Development Project will expand the capacity of existing junctions and bridges to around 19,600 vehicles per hour to streamline traffic on Al Khail Road and decongest the flyovers crossing Al Khail Road. Also reduce travel time by 30 percent.

“Al Khail Road is one of the main highways in Dubai, serving Dubai’s more than 1.5 million people and being used by more than 300,000 vehicles every day,” he noted.

The mega-project will improve traffic flow in seven areas along Al Khail Road, including Jabeel, Maidan, Al Quoz 1, Al Jadaf, Qadeer Al Thair and Jumeirah Village Circle.

Al Shehhi also noted the fast turnaround of the project as the bridges were completed within nine months.

Three bridges, including the bridge at Zaa’beel, were recently opened to the public to connect traffic from Al Khail Road to Financial Center Street towards Sheikh Zayed Road. Another one at Al Quoz 1 connects traffic from Al Khail Road to Al Waha Street and Latifah Bint Hamdan Street; and the third between the intersections of Hessa and Al Khamila Streets, serving the Jumeirah Village Circle community.

Al Shehhi said the last of the five bridges will be opened next week. It is located between Latifah Interchange and Maidan Interchange, and will complete the Al Khail Road Development Project.
