UAE Prioritizes Global Crisis Resolution at UNGA 2024

As the 79th session of the United Arab Emirates General Assembly (UNGA) begins, the UAE has positioned itself as a key player in addressing pressing global crises, including the conflicts in Gaza, Ukraine and Sudan, and the urgent challenge of climate change. . Mohamed Abushahab, Permanent Representative of the United Arab Emirates to the UN, stressed the need to find effective solutions to these issues.

In an exclusive interview, Mr. He underscored the importance of upholding the principles of the UN Charter in guiding efforts towards enlargement, dialogue and peaceful conflict resolution. The UAE aims to maintain its role as a practical and principled voice at the UN, balancing a firm commitment to its values with a pragmatic approach to diplomacy and cooperation.

The humanitarian aspect of the UAE’s agenda is particularly noteworthy as it is one of the largest contributors to global aid. Mr. Abu Shahab acknowledged the challenges of securing humanitarian access to conflict zones, stressing the need to use UN mechanisms to uphold international humanitarian law and ensure the delivery of aid to those in need.

Focusing specifically on the crisis in Gaza, the ambassador described the situation as “unbearable” and reiterated the UAE’s call for an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages and the resumption of a political process aimed at achieving a two-state solution. He expressed strong support for full UN General Assembly membership for Palestine and argued for recognition as a sovereign state.

Regarding the crisis in Sudan, Mr. Abushahab highlighted its regional implications, noting that developments there could significantly affect neighboring countries and the Horn of Africa. He reiterated the UAE’s position for an immediate ceasefire and safe passage for humanitarian aid, arguing for good faith engagement in peace talks to facilitate a transition to civilian rule.

Beyond resolving political crises, the UAE also focuses on sustainable development, particularly in the context of climate action. Continuing its work during the success of the UAE Security Council and COP28 in Dubai, the UAE aims to strengthen climate agreements and address issues related to water scarcity. The Water Conference, hosted by the UAE in December 2026, is important in catalyzing global efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, which focus on clean water and sanitation.

As the world faces increasing water-related challenges, with billions of people without access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation, the UAE’s commitment to this cause is critical. The World Meteorological Organization has warned that more than half of the world’s population could face water shortages by 2050, underscoring the urgency of the issue. Emerging technologies, especially artificial intelligence (AI), are also a priority for the UAE. Mr. Abushahab noted the transformative potential of AI in various fields, stressing the need for international cooperation to establish global guidelines to minimize risks while maximizing the opportunities offered by technological advances.

The UAE is committed to empowering women and girls, promoting tolerance and fostering peace. The recent UN Security Council resolution 2686, co-authored by the United Arab Emirates and the UK, addresses the links between hate speech, extremism and conflict. The resolution acknowledges the harmful effects of discrimination and intolerance on global stability and underscores the importance of building community resilience against such issues.

In short, the UAE’s proactive stance at the UNGA reflects its commitment to addressing global crises, supporting humanitarian efforts, and promoting sustainable development and technological innovation while advocating for tolerance and peace in a complex world.
