CAA Invites Bids to Implement E-Gates at Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad Airports

Pakistan Plans Smart Gates at Airports for Seamless Travel Experience
Islamabad: The Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is set to enhance travel convenience for passengers flying out of major Pakistani airports by installing new smart gates. This initiative aims to streamline immigration processes and improve overall passenger satisfaction.
Introduction of Smart Gates
The CAA has invited bids from companies to install e-gates at Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad airports. Inspired by similar systems in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, these smart gates will automate identity verification and immigration procedures.
Benefits for Expatriates in UAE
With nearly 2 million Pakistani expatriates in the Emirates, the installation of smart gates is expected to significantly ease travel for this community. The system will facilitate a self-service immigration process, reducing costs and enhancing efficiency.
CAA’s Statement
According to the CAA, the smart gates project will modernize airport operations, particularly in handling the increasing number of passengers. The initiative aims to integrate top-tier technologies for seamless border control and security processing.
Strategic Importance of UAE-Pakistan Air Corridor
The air corridor between UAE and Pakistan is vital, serving one of the busiest routes between the two countries. Over 1.7 million Pakistanis reside in the UAE, making up 17% of its population and contributing significantly to its workforce.
Recent Trends in Migration
In 2023, the Bureau of Emigration and Overseas Employment reported a 4% increase in Pakistani workers moving abroad for employment opportunities, highlighting the growing demand for streamlined travel services.
Implementation Details
The CAA emphasized that the installation of smart gates will alleviate pressure on manned immigration counters. It will establish a standardized automated immigration process, ensuring document verification and personal authentication for enhanced border security.
Call for Bids
Interested local and international companies are invited to submit bids by August 13, 2024, to participate in the installation, integration, testing, commissioning, and maintenance of the e-Gate systems.
Airline Connectivity
Major UAE airlines such as Emirates, Flydubai, Etihad, and Air Arabia operate frequent flights to key Pakistani cities including Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Quetta, Sialkot, Faisalabad, and Multan. Flydubai recently expanded its services to include Islamabad and Lahore.
This initiative underscores Pakistan’s commitment to enhancing its aviation infrastructure and ensuring a seamless travel experience for passengers traveling between Pakistan and the UAE
