Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, has granted approval for the establishment of a specialized medical city dedicated to the healthcare of women and children in the emirate. This ambitious initiative involves the integration of several key healthcare facilities, namely Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, focusing on pediatric care, Corniche Hospital dedicated to women and newborns, a rehabilitation complex, and a mental health center catering specifically to women and children.

During his recent visit to the proposed site, Sheikh Khaled underscored the transformative impact of these plans on Abu Dhabi’s healthcare ecosystem, emphasizing their significant contribution to the emirate’s overall healthcare infrastructure. Additionally, he provided directives for the development of further high-quality, specialized facilities, emphasizing the importance of an integrated and preventive healthcare system.

The envisioned center of excellence will be staffed by a team of over 200 doctors representing 29 specialties, including oncology, ophthalmology, neurosurgery, transplantation (covering liver, kidney, and bowel), gastroenterology, and cardiac medicine. The facility is designed to accommodate 250 beds, with dedicated sections for mental health services and long-term pediatric care. It will serve as a hub for advancing research and innovation in the field of children’s health, aiming to develop modern and effective treatments.

Sheikh Khaled also approved the strategic transfer of Corniche Hospital facilities to Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, with the relocated hospital slated to open its doors in 2027. The new facility will offer 205 beds, including 90 designated for children and 15 maternity wards. The medical staff, consisting of over 120 doctors and 460 nursing and midwifery specialists, will deliver comprehensive care spanning obstetrics, gynecology, fertility, assisted reproductive services, as well as women’s mental and general health.

In addition to these pivotal healthcare services, the medical city will house the Salma Children’s Rehabilitation Hospital and a dedicated center for the mental health of women and children. Dignitaries attending the visit included Mansoor Al Mansoori, chairman of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi; Saif Saeed Ghobash, secretary-general of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council; Dr. Noura Al Ghaithi, undersecretary of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi; and Shaista Asif, co-founder and group chief executive of PureHealth.
