India and Oman sign defense collaboration pact
India, Oman Emphasizing procurement of military equipment

India and Oman have taken a significant step in enhancing their defense cooperation by signing an agreement that establishes a framework for collaboration in various defense-related areas, including the procurement of military equipment.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was formalized during a meeting of the India-Oman joint military cooperation committee (JMCC) held in Muscat. The talks involved an extensive review of the existing defense cooperation between the two nations and explored avenues for further strengthening it in alignment with their shared strategic interests.
The specific focus of the discussions was on potential collaboration in the defense industrial sector. Led by India’s Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane, the Indian delegation engaged in talks that delved into new areas of cooperation, encompassing training, joint exercises, information sharing, oceanography, shipbuilding, and maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) facilities.
The MoU pertaining to the procurement of defense material and equipment serves as a foundational framework for collaboration in emerging sectors of defense.
The comprehensive discussions also touched upon the prevailing security situation in West Asia, addressing concerns arising from the targeting of cargo vessels in the Red Sea by Houthi militants. The defense ministries of both countries acknowledged and appreciated the robust defense cooperation that has been developed over the years. The meeting aimed to build mutual trust and interoperability between the armed forces of India and Oman, exploring effective and practical initiatives to further boost bilateral defense engagements, with a particular focus on collaboration in defense industries.
The signing of the MoU comes over a month after India and Oman revealed a joint vision document titled ‘A Partnership for the Future.’ This vision document, adopted during the visit of Oman’s Sultan Haitham Bin Tarik to India in December, lays the foundation for future cooperation and partnership between the two countries. In Muscat, Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane also engaged in bilateral talks with Oman’s Defence Ministry’s Secretary General Mohammed Bin Naseer Bin Ali Al Zaabi.
During these discussions, Aramane highlighted the potential of India’s domestic defense industry, emphasizing its capacity and capability. He expressed optimism about a fruitful partnership between the Indian defense industry and the armed forces of Oman. The Omanese side reciprocated by expressing confidence in the capability of the Indian defense industry.
As part of the engagement, Giridhar Aramane extended an invitation to the Omanese Secretary General and his delegation to visit India, offering them an opportunity to witness the capabilities of the Indian defense industry, especially in the aerospace and maritime sectors.
Oman stands as one of India’s closest defense partners in the Gulf region, and defense cooperation has emerged as a key pillar in the strategic partnership between the two nations. The commitment to work under the vision of a strategic partnership underscores the depth and significance of the relationship.
