Dubai Plans Construction of 762 Bus Shelters in Strategic Locations by 2025
Features of the Bus Shelters Include Shaded Areas, Information Screens, and Accessibility for People with Disabilities

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has unveiled plans to erect 762 public bus shelters strategically positioned across the emirate, designed to seamlessly blend functionality with an aesthetically pleasing appeal.
These shelters, as emphasized by the RTA, are envisioned to reflect Dubai’s refined urban character while prioritizing safety and stability. The architectural design integrates structural elements that not only serve practical purposes but also embody Dubai’s image as a secure and sophisticated urban space.
Scheduled for completion by 2025, the project aims for innovation by exploring the application of 3D printing technology in constructing selected shelters, done in collaboration with a specialized company.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA, highlighted the significance of these shelters in enhancing public transport services and ensuring a comprehensive and reliable infrastructure. Al Tayer emphasized the shelters’ adherence to the Dubai Code for People of Determination, ensuring accessibility features for individuals with disabilities, including designated wheelchair-accessible areas.
Al Tayer underscored the alignment of this initiative with His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s “My Community… A Place for Everyone” initiative. The project echoes Dubai’s commitment to becoming an inclusive and welcoming city for people with disabilities, aligning with RTA’s dedication to serving and enhancing the happiness of this community segment.
Moreover, the construction of these shelters aligns with RTA’s strategic goal of increasing public transport usage across all segments of the community. The initiative aims to elevate the aesthetic appeal of the city while encouraging greater reliance on public transportation, contributing significantly to RTA’s objective of enhancing overall mobility in Dubai.
Careful consideration went into selecting the locations, factoring in various parameters such as areas with high population density, current and future requirements of public bus services, integration with other modes of transportation, and the availability of sufficient infrastructure and space within the right-of-way, as explained by Al Tayer.
The shelters are categorized into four tiers based on usage, ranging from stops catering to over 750 passengers daily to smaller pick-up/drop-off stations. Each shelter will offer shaded areas, advertising spaces, and informative displays showcasing bus routes, schedules, and relevant passenger information.
The RTA reaffirms its commitment to ongoing development projects in Dubai, focusing on accommodating the city’s urban and demographic expansion. The emphasis remains on enhancing mass transportation services to provide safe, efficient, and convenient travel options for both residents and visitors alike.
