Dubai: RTA Announces Metro Service Changes from August 3
New separate routes for Expo 2020 and UAE Exchange stations aim to enhance travel efficiency

Dubai: RTA Announces Metro Service Changes from August 3
Starting Saturday, August 3, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai will introduce important modifications to its Metro services. This change involves the implementation of separate Metro trips for passengers heading to Expo 2020 Metro Station and UAE Exchange Metro Station on the Red Line. The RTA announced these changes on Friday via a post on X (formerly Twitter), providing advance notice to commuters.
Key Changes in Metro Service Operations
The new operational model will see Dubai Metro trains running on distinct routes for passengers traveling to either Expo 2020 Metro Station or UAE Exchange Metro Station. This separation is intended to enhance the efficiency of the service and ensure that passengers can reach their destinations more directly. To accommodate these changes, display screens at all Metro stations will now provide real-time information about the routes of incoming trains. Commuters are strongly advised to pay close attention to these screens and verify the train’s destination before boarding to avoid any inconvenience.
Previous Enhancements to Metro Services
In April, the RTA had previously announced an upgrade to the Dubai Metro Red Line that included the operation of a Y junction. This significant development aimed to streamline travel by eliminating the need for passengers to change trains at the Jabal Ali Metro Station. As a result of this upgrade, travelers moving between Centrepoint and UAE Exchange stations, and vice versa, no longer need to disembark and transfer trains at Jabal Ali. This improvement has been well-received by commuters who benefit from a more seamless journey.
Future Expansion Plans for the Dubai Metro
The Dubai Executive Council outlined an extensive plan for the expansion of the Dubai Metro network in June. The proposed expansion aims to increase the number of stations from the current total of 64 to 96 by the year 2030. By 2040, the network is expected to encompass 140 stations covering a total area of 228 square kilometers. This expansion will significantly enhance the reach and accessibility of public transport across the emirate.
Objectives and Benefits of the Expansion
The primary goals of the Metro expansion are to boost the share of public transport usage in Dubai to 45 percent and to reduce carbon emissions to 16 tonnes per capita. The expansion is also intended to improve the overall efficiency and convenience of the city’s sustainable transport infrastructure. According to the RTA, these advancements are in alignment with Dubai’s broader sustainability goals and are designed to provide residents and visitors with a more effective and environmentally friendly transport option.
The RTA’s continued efforts to upgrade and expand the Dubai Metro network reflect its commitment to improving urban mobility and supporting Dubai’s growth as a global city. The changes and future plans are expected to deliver significant benefits to the commuting public, making travel more efficient and contributing to the city’s sustainability objectives.
