During a routine flight from Dubai to Islamabad, passengers aboard a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) aircraft experienced a moment of concern when they detected a burning smell emanating from the food storage area. Swift action ensued as an emergency was declared, prompting the deployment of essential services, including fire brigade and ambulances, at Dubai Airport, as reported by Pakistani media outlets on Saturday. Confirming the incident, a spokesperson for PIA informed ARY News media about the in-flight smoke detection and subsequent delay in departure.
Following a thorough examination by the flight crew, the aircraft was ultimately cleared for departure to Islamabad.
This incident unfolded during the commencement of PIA’s post-Haj flight operations, which commenced on May 9 and will extend until June 10, 2024. The airline is facilitating direct flights to Jeddah and Madina from eight cities across Pakistan, including Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Multan, Quetta, Sialkot, and Sukkur, as reported by ARY News.
Highlighting PIA’s commitment to serving pilgrims, the spokesperson reiterated that approximately 34,000 pilgrims are expected to be accommodated through 170 flights during this period, catering to both government-sponsored and private pilgrims.
Of note, passengers commencing their journey from Karachi or Islamabad can avail themselves of Saudi immigration facilities at the airport, courtesy of the Road to Mecca Project.
However, incidents of negligence have marred PIA’s reputation. Just a day prior, the staffers of a PIA flight bound for Skardu from Islamabad neglected to load the body of a six-year-old boy onto the aircraft, while his grieving parents boarded unaware that their beloved son’s remains were left behind, as reported by Dawn.
The heart-wrenching realization struck the parents upon their arrival at Skardu airport, where they fainted upon learning of their son’s inadvertent abandonment at Islamabad’s airport. This incident underscores the importance of stringent protocols and heightened vigilance within the aviation industry to prevent such oversights with potentially devastating consequences.
