Dubai: Japan Restarts E-Visas for Residents, Services Now Offered by VFS

VFS Global to manage Japan visas for UAE residents as e-visa services resume in September

UAE Residents to Apply for Japan Visas Through VFS Global as E-Visa Services Resume

UAE residents planning to travel to Japan will now need to apply for their visas through VFS Global, as confirmed by the Consulate-General of Japan in Dubai. This change applies to both short and long-term paper visas, which will be processed by VFS Global starting from August 1, 2024. The move signifies a shift in how visa applications are handled, as the Consulate-General will no longer accept direct applications except for diplomatic and official visas.

Resumption of E-Visa Services

The e-visa service, which had been suspended for Dubai residents in April 2024, is set to resume in September. Tourists wishing to travel to Japan will be required to apply for their visas through VFS Global, as the option for residents to complete the process online has been withdrawn by the Embassy and Consulate. The VFS Global website now lists itself as a partner of the Embassy of Japan in the UAE and the Consulate-General of Japan in Dubai, indicating its pivotal role in managing visa applications.

VFS Global’s Role and Process

With the introduction of this new system, the Consulate-General of Japan in Dubai has clarified that visa applications will not be accepted directly, except for those classified as diplomatic or official. For all other visa inquiries and applications, residents are instructed to contact VFS Global directly. Detailed information regarding visa application requirements, necessary documentation, appointment booking, opening hours, and processing times is available on the VFS Global website, providing applicants with a clear guide to the new procedure.

Impact of E-Visa Suspension

The e-visa service, launched earlier, quickly gained popularity among UAE residents, making Japan one of the most sought-after destinations in Asia. However, the suspension of the service on April 27, 2024, made the visa application process more challenging for expatriates planning trips to Japan. Previously, applicants had to email the Japanese Consulate in Dubai to secure an appointment, often resulting in difficulties securing slots due to high demand. During this period, Emirati nationals continued to enjoy visa-free travel to Japan.

New Partnership and Processing Times

Under the new partnership with VFS Global, the standard processing time for visa applications is approximately eight working days from the date of submission, provided that all required documents are complete. This processing period aims to streamline the visa application process and make it more efficient for travelers.

E-Visa Eligibility and Conditions

The short-term e-visa, which is part of the resumed services, permits foreigners to enter Japan for a period of up to 90 days and is valid for three months from the date of issuance. Residents from countries such as Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, and the USA are eligible to apply for the e-visa for tourism purposes. This reinstatement of the e-visa service is expected to facilitate travel for many residents and renew interest in Japan as a travel destination.

The transition to processing visas through VFS Global represents a significant change in the application process for UAE residents, aiming to enhance efficiency and provide clear guidance for applicants. As the e-visa services resume, it is anticipated that the process will be more accessible, encouraging travel to Japan and supporting the tourism sector’s recovery.
