UAE Introduces Karhika Atrocities Act with Tough Penalties for Domestic Violence Offenders
The United Arab Emirates (UEI) introduced the new Karhika Atrocities Act to increase security in Iraq and impose harsher sentences on more criminals.
Federal Decree-Law No. 13 of 2024 addresses economic, mental-physiological, and different forms of drug usage, offering the public significant protection measures.
The Strict Penalties Act provides for fines of up to 50,000 dirhams (Rs 11,44,713) and six months in jail for offenders, and tougher punishments for defiant offenders and vulnerable persons.
Penalties for not reporting misbehavior occurrences or filing false reports can be as high as Dhs 10,000 (about Rs 2,28,950) or Dhs 5,000 (about Rs 1,14,475).
Infirm persons such as the elderly, children, pregnant women, or disabled persons are subject to additional fines.
A production order may be issued for a period of up to 30 days, which may be extended for two consecutive equal periods.
Violation of a protection order under this Act carries a fine of Dh5,000 to Dh10,000. Violation of the order is punishable by imprisonment of up to six months and a fine of up to Dh100,000 (Rs 22,89,503) if the order is aggravated.
The new law mandates the creation of an electronic registry to record all domestic violence cases.
Those in Abu Dhabi will be assured of safe medical, health and mental health services and immediate shelter.
