UAE to Launch Test Flights of First Electric Air Taxi ‘Midnight’ by End of 2025

The United Arab Emirates is preparing to begin test flights of its first electric air taxi by the end of 2025, an advanced urban mobility solution named Midnight. The project, led by Archer Aviation, marks a major milestone in the UAE’s efforts to revolutionize short-distance travel and reduce urban congestion through sustainable transportation technologies.
Speaking to Arab News, Dr. Talib Alhinai, General Manager of Archer Aviation, confirmed that the eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) aircraft will undergo phased testing, beginning in remote areas and expanding to more densely populated urban regions. The first test flights will take place in Abu Dhabi, which is being positioned as the operational base for this ambitious initiative.

Midnight runs entirely on electricity and is intended for brief, intra-city flights. It takes off and lands vertically, like a helicopter, but uses a fixed-wing system to switch to horizontal flight, accommodating four passengers plus a pilot. Twelve electric motors power this capability, six of which are positioned in the front and can tilt to allow for a seamless transition from vertical lift-off to forward flight in less than forty-five seconds.

Local manufacturing potential is part of the UAE’s long-term goal, and Archer Aviation has signed a framework agreement with the Abu Dhabi Investment Office to investigate establishing a production unit and dedicated research center there.

Although no official date has been set for commercial rollout, the introduction of Midnight signifies the UAE’s commitment to future-forward, eco-friendly air transportation and cements its position as a regional pioneer in smart mobility solutions.
