Dubai: UAE Students Set to Shine at World Debating and Public Speaking Championships
A group of talented students from the UAE is eagerly preparing to showcase their exceptional debating and public speaking skills on the global stage at the upcoming World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships (WIDPSC) in Canberra, Australia. Scheduled from April 14 to 20, this prestigious event will see participants from around the world compete in various categories, including Persuasive Speaking, Interpretive Reading, Debate, and Impromptu Speaking.
Leading the charge is Ved Kedia from Jumeirah College, who has been selected to represent the UAE in this esteemed competition. Expressing his excitement, Ved stated, “The competition provides me with a platform to demonstrate my abilities in debate and public speaking on an international scale. It’s an incredible opportunity to showcase my skills as part of Team UAE and to connect with peers from diverse cultural backgrounds. My goal is to return home with not only valuable experiences but also with a deeper understanding of rhetorical techniques and, hopefully, a trophy.”
The journey towards the WIDPSC has been marked by rigorous training and preparation under the expert guidance of Sumana Chatterjee, the students’ dedicated coach. Ved highlighted the importance of these training sessions, where participants have engaged in constructive discussions, honed their speaking skills, and developed effective debating strategies. Additionally, sessions with past competitors and winners have provided valuable insights into the competition dynamics, further enhancing the students’ readiness for the championship.
Reflecting on their individual preparations, students like Nikhil Gopakumar from GEMS Modern Academy emphasized the significance of mastering the art of persuasion. “Ethos and pathos are crucial elements in persuasive speaking,” Nikhil explained. “By appealing to emotions, incorporating statistical data, and presenting logical arguments, I aim to effectively persuade my audience, whether it’s a judge or a friend.”
Similarly, Aarya Gupta from Hartland International School emphasized the comprehensive approach taken in their preparations, which include thorough readings, practice sessions, and mentorship from their coaches. “Our coaches have provided invaluable guidance and support, helping us refine our speaking techniques and fine-tune our arguments,” Aarya shared.
Preparations for the championship have demanded dedication and perseverance from all participants. Vanya Kaul, another student from Jumeirah College, emphasized the importance of consistent practice. “There is no substitute for practice,” Vanya stated. “Our coaches have equipped us with strategies and techniques, but it’s through regular practice that we truly enhance our skills and build confidence.”
Beyond the competitive aspect, students like Aadesh Yadgouda from GEMS Modern Academy see the championship as an opportunity for personal growth and meaningful connections. “The camaraderie and friendships formed during our preparation have been remarkable,” Aadesh remarked. “I look forward to expanding my horizons, stepping out of my comfort zone, and forging lasting relationships with fellow participants.”
Sumana Chatterjee, the coach overseeing the students’ preparation, highlighted the broader impact of their participation in such international events. “Participating in the WIDPSC not only showcases the talents of our students but also fosters cultural understanding and global citizenship,” Sumana emphasized. “It is a testament to the UAE’s commitment to nurturing young talent and promoting cross-cultural dialogue.”
As the students gear up for the championship, they carry with them the collective aspirations of their schools, mentors, and the UAE community. With determination, skill, and a passion for public speaking, they are poised to make a lasting impression on the global stage.
